Literally just a casebook

This book could be greatly improved if it contained more than just cases, and author's notes. It needs more explanation of the law, and how it applies. This, after all, is the essence of a casebook. I've always thought that we buy textbooks in law school because they give you more than a key search on Westlaw. Throughout this course, though, I was frustrated by the Author's bare use of cases. There is no overview of the salient points preceding the opinions. This is fine if you're learning the law through independent research. However, when I'm paying $250 for a textbook, you expect a little more from the authors, such as are provided in other casebooks. You won't find things like headings with explanations with the law and its elements, etc. in this casebook. Those are what I find helpful, and this book makes reviewing difficult, because if you want to review a point of law, you need to read the entire case again, rather than referring to the author's explanation.

Bottom line, If you're a lawyer or law student who wants to learn copyright law on your own, I'm sure there is a better book out there. This book doesn't give you much more than a search on Lexis or Westlaw. If you're a professor considering using this book for your class, I would recommend a different book for your class.

Possibly the best casebook in existence

Let's be clear. This is a casebook. It is intended for use by law students in the context of a class taught by a law professor. It is not intended for independent study or review. For that, you want a treatise rather than a casebook. I recommend Chisum et al's Understanding Intellectual Property.

As casebooks go, however, this one is outstanding. As a law professor, I have reviewed at least twenty casebooks across different subjects before making my selections for the courses I teach. This one is the best casebook I have ever seen.

If you are buying this book on Amazon, you are almost certainly a student who has no choice in the matter anyway. Don't be discouraged by Arguably's review. This book won't spoon feed you the black letter law, but it is well designed for a great classroom experience.

Important New Historical Discoveries

I admire Chiasson's writing and find his take on these ruins very convincing. I had never heard of the idea that Chinese settled Cape Breton and Nova Scotia before the Europeans did. I think he has done a very thorough analysis of this subject and is willing to go in courageous new directions in Canadian history. Of course he finds a lot of opposition, this always happens when controversial new evidence emerges. He sticks to the facts he has come upon and doesn't expand on all the possibilities these new developments imply. I wish he did a little more of that. This book focuses on one little town and the ruins he comes across are not remarkably interesting, certainly not something like Stonehenge, but the fact that he proves they are pre-European is the fascinating part. My only problem with the book is he is making a whole book out of a somewhat dry story about this one little area. To accomplish this he bring in other controversies about who else may have appeared in Nova Scotia and how early. His attention to details, while demonstrating thorough research can be a little more than I really desire to read about. I certainly hope Mr. Chiasson writes more books about this subject, I believe there are many more ruins to find and the implications of his writing will upset the whole colonial settlement applecart in eastern Canada.

How the Chinese settled in North America pre-Columbus and an exploration of how history is told

After having read and thoroughly enjoyed Chiasson’s first book, The Island of Seven Cities, I looked forward to finding out more about his theory that the Chinese possibly settled in Canada before Columbus set sail for America. I was not let down. Written in the Ruins provides tales of explorers, maps, legends and archeology. Chiasson resurrects the stories of people from the distant past and explains their influence in shaping history that most of us never question. Chiasson offers compelling and detailed research. He raises questions without demanding that the reader agree with his theory. Rather, the reader is encouraged to synthesize the evidence and draw our own conclusions. In the end I was left with no doubt that a Chinese fleet came to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and settled the island well before any European set foot on North American soil. Written in the Ruins is a wonderful read for anyone. It will be of particular interest to those who are intrigued by world history, how that history gets told and what is left unsaid until someone like Chiasson bravely steps forward.

It saw two million Bosnian Muslims threatened with Europe’s first genocide since the Second World War; most of them already driven from their homes by massacre, rape and terror. It saw Bosnia’s legal, multi-ethnic government treated as a mere “warring party” and pressed to surrender by Western governments eager for peace at any price. And it also saw a liberal and left opinion in the West unable to offer any explanation for the continuing war beyond variations on the racist notion of an innate propensity for violence among the peoples of Yugoslavia, or indiscriminate lamentations about the evils of nationalism.

Combining political analysis, reportage, polemic and personal reflection, this book provides the first inside account and analysis of the tragic path leading to Yugoslavia’s break-up. Against the background of events as they occurred since Tito’s death in 1980, it tracks the process whereby an equitable settlement between the country’s constituent nations was destroyed by an increasingly virulent Great-Serb nationalism, bent on recentralizing the country under its own hegemony.

The book is written not by a passive spectator but by a participant with a firm grasp of Yugoslavia’s history, which accounts for the breadth of its content. As the decade it covers draws to a close, Branka Magaš’s initial cautious optimism changes to a growing intimation of impending tragedy, and finally to outrage at the slaughter visited upon Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina by the Serbian army, with the tolerance or complicity of Western chancelleries. The Destruction of Yugoslavia�represents a unique documentary testimony to Yugoslavia’s regression towards disintegration, war, and the horrors of “ethnic cleansing;” a testimony which is frighteningly accurate.

Magas, a Croatian journalist and historian, offers some pointed, alternative perspectives on the former Yugoslavia in this compilation of her often-prescient articles, written for New Left Review and other journals. Though this is not a comprehensive or narrative history, and some articles are redundant, Magas adds to the literature of Yugoslavia by emphasizing the politics of intellectuals; she identifies the 1981 institution of martial law in the province of Kosovo as a watershed, since Serbian leftist intellectuals did not protest but rallied to nationalism. Magas criticizes intellectuals inside and outside the country for not understanding the link between uenven economic development and nationalist intolerance. Serbian nationalism, she observes, is backed by "the only structures of the Yugoslav Communist state that managed to escape the process of democratization: the Serbian Communist Party and the Army High Command." The book also includes manifestos and letters from Yugoslavian organizations and from Yugoslavians outside the country. Magas's writings show that at least some observers were warning of chaos long before it erupted.

So significant an event as the dissolution of socialist Yugoslavia and the ensuing war will surely be a matter of controversial interpretation. The strength of this book lies in its rich detail and the author's social democratic viewpoint. Accounts of miners' strikes and their brutal repression in Labin (Croatia) and Trepca (Kosovo) are exemplary of the regime's loss of legitimacy. Magas's emphasis on the "watershed" of the 1981 Kosovo insurgency and the "strategy of destabilizing" the federation undertaken by Serbia's Milosevic are consistent with the opinion of many. However, less satisfactory are Magas's relative neglect of republics other than Serbia and the episodic quality of chapters written over more than a decade. This upper-level book will be of greatest value to other scholars and to those already familiar with the area. Recommended for academic libraries. This book takes it's readers on a wild ride

Of course when found out by a nosy neighbor, the city stirrups trouble for the unique couple. The stress eventually becomes to much in the end however, and Kathryn and Mr. Horseman's love doesn't last furlong. Kathryn finds out shes not his mane partner and their seemingly everlasting affair turns into a real night-mare.

Almost Perfect

This is a wonderful book. I began learning spanish Seven months ago and now I am offered numerous jobs as a translater because I speak it so well. I owe part of that to this book for teaching me the old metaphors of the latino world. I refered back to this book almost everyday and I learned so much. "cada subida tiene su bajada." "No hay rosa sin espina." "cuando nacio el ahorcado hijito pario su madre." These are just a few of my favorite dichos from this book. The only thing it needed was to literally translate the meanings so students of the spanish language could get even more from this wonderful compilation of hispanic wisdom.
