The Sleep of Reason: The James Bulger Case, by David James Smith

Friday, February 12 1993. Two outwardly unremarkable ten-year-old boys, Robert Thompson and Jon Venables, began their day playing truant and ended it running an errand for a local video shop. In between they abducted and killed the toddler James Bulger. The Sleep of Reason is the harrowing, sensitive, definitive account of this terrible crime and its consequences.

In a new Preface (which considers the re-arrest of Jon Venables in February 2010) David James Smith writes: 'It is as true now as it was then that the murder has never really been explained and the motive for the crime remains a mystery. This book, the result of considerable research and a painstaking, sometimes distressing assembly of the facts, was my attempt to offer some insight and understanding.'

'Surprisingly evocative, even moving... immensely valuable.' Times

'Dramatic and disturbing.' Anita Brookner, Observer

'Compelling and compassionate.' Times Educational Supplement

Well-written and factual
By Amazon Customer
If you're interested in the Bulger murder, this is a good, complete account that details not only the crime itself, but covers the prior lives of the killers, and the trial and investigation. Don't be put off by the lacklustre cover, which looks like a college text. This is an immediate, lively telling, which concentrates on relating the facts of the case. The author notes up front that there is no speculation, invented dialogue, etc. The nightmarish casualness of the killers comes through well in the narrative.

The book was originally published in 1994, only a year after the murder. This edition is an updated one, from 2011. It includes a final chapter about developments in the case from 1994 to 2011. The author has also decided to share his clearly-labelled speculations about unresolved aspects of the case, including motive, in the new edition. It is, I think, a wise addition. There's also an active table of contents, always helpful, but no index or footnotes.

The book could have been improved by photos and (especially) maps. Everyone (I think) knows what the boys looked like, and a map isn't strictly necessary for following along with the narrative, but it does help. I kept going to Google as I read. In looking online at pictures of the murder site, I was shocked by how open and visible it was - not at all closed in and hidden as I'd imagined. Pictures like that would have helped in visualizing the scene, I think.

In the end, four stars. Well-written, packed with facts, but needed an index and at least a few pictures of the crime scene.

Well put
By Harriet Damen
Good narrative of all that happened in 1993 with at the end a very useful and even "logical" explanation for this horrific crime. The big question why, what everbody wants to know, is partly explained by the author. It can never be a wholly satisfying explanation for all that happened and of course nobody knows what the killers really thought and did at the time. But I found it a good read and it has given me a lot of insights.

A Fine Study of A Truly Awful, Sad Event
By Gozer the Gozerian
When James Bulger was abducted and killed I was a 20 year old college student in a quiet corner of Vermont. Aside from the general, horrific details, and a vague recollection of the security camera images, I remembered little of it. Recently the case was mentioned during a public radio discussion here in New York, which dealt with the topic of juvenile offenders being tried and sentenced as adults, and this prompted my interest in learning more about the case, and this, in turn, lead me to Mr. Smith's book. All in all, the book is a very well reasoned, well researched, and critically thought out examination of an internationally publicized and universally reviled crime. There's no escaping the thoroughly depressing and terrible nature of the murder itself, perpetrated against a victim as innocent and defenseless as a toddler, by two small boys who were also children. The youth of the victim, coupled with the fact that the starting point of the events leading to the murder were captured and frozen for all time in some grainy CCTV frames, beamed around the UK, and eventually the world, tends to fix and amplify one's sense of revulsion and horror. As the author illustrates early in the book -- children killing other children isn't new, or even particularly novel, but because of those chilling images of the initial abduction of a smiling, beautiful baby, this case seemingly generated more media coverage and outrage than many have, before or since. The book, which was originally published in 1994, was updated with some new material in 2011, after one of the killers, Jon Venables, had been re-imprisoned on a charge of possessing child pornography. I think he's been released again since. We'll probably never really know the "why" to any satisfaction, but the author comes as close as anyone aside from the killers has, or likely will. Regardless, in the end you're just left with an empty and sad feeling that this ever happened; sad for poor baby James, and his parents. I even feel sad for the Venables, the Thompsons, the policemen and policewomen involved, and, of course, for the "Liverpool 38": the many witnesses who had the misfortune of crossing paths with James and his killers, as they walked him on to his eventual death. The eternal "What ifs" are palpable, even 20 + years and thousands of miles removed from the railway bank. It's almost more like a bizarre cosmic accident than a crime. The unfortunate reality is that there are no evil born demons, no amount of slasher film viewing, and violent video game playing that can adequately explain why this happened or will happen again. It's an all too human peculiarity which we still don't really understand, and probably never truly will. And therein lies the true horror of it.

Learn How to Design and Implement HAR Systems

The pervasiveness and range of capabilities of today’s mobile devices have enabled a wide spectrum of mobile applications that are transforming our daily lives, from smartphones equipped with GPS to integrated mobile sensors that acquire physiological data. Human Activity Recognition: Using Wearable Sensors and Smartphones focuses on the automatic identification of human activities from pervasive wearable sensors―a crucial component for health monitoring and also applicable to other areas, such as entertainment and tactical operations.

Developed from the authors’ nearly four years of rigorous research in the field, the book covers the theory, fundamentals, and applications of human activity recognition (HAR). The authors examine how machine learning and pattern recognition tools help determine a user’s activity during a certain period of time. They propose two systems for performing HAR: Centinela, an offline server-oriented HAR system, and Vigilante, a completely mobile real-time activity recognition system. The book also provides a practical guide to the development of activity recognition applications in the Android framework.

Received my copy of this book today from amazon. It took just a week for delivery, nicely packed and damage free. For researchers who are working on HAR using smartphone sensors, this is a very good reference and also a good comparison of work.

To Burn (Lone Warriors Book 1), by Claudia Dain

Book one in a 6 book series The Romans had taken Britain and made it their own, but when the Roman Empire collapses on itself, the Roman legions leave the fringes of the Empire and draw back toward the center, to Rome. Leaving Britannia defenseless against the Saxon barbarians.

She was a Roman Briton and she embodied all that Rome stood for. He hated her on sight. She, proudly Roman, fought him with every breath. He burned his way into her life, destroying the world as she knew it, and she vowed to fight him to the death, either hers or his.

He was a Saxon warrior and stood for everything she loathed and feared. He was a beast, an animal...a barbarian. He destroyed her villa by fire and then stayed to torment her, finding joy in her despair, playing out his revenge upon her until he grew bored with his game and decided to kill her.

The hate they felt for each other burned with a fiery blaze, yet when he touched her, she trembled. They felt only hatred burning in their souls...or was it respect, admiration, and even love?

From Publishers Weekly
With its wealth of rapid-fire repartee and smoldering sex scenes, Claudia Dane's To Burn lives up to its title, spinning a red-hot, medieval-era romance between Wulfred, a vengeful Saxon conqueror intent on bending Rome and its people to his will, and Melania, Wulfred's proud and plucky Roman prisoner. As Wulfred and Melania engage in a delightful battle of wills he deems she should live and suffer as his slave, so she tries every method to kill herself and thwart him the romantic tension between the pair mounts, but their old enmities may be too great to overcome. An overwrought but seductive romance by one of the genre's fastest rising stars, Dane's newest (after The Marriage Bed) brims with beguiling characters and historical richness.

Dain not only burns, she shines!!
By Deborah MacGillivray
I have long admired Dorchester Publishing, finding I read more and more of their writers such as Melanie Jackson and Trish Jensen. They are fresh, super storytellers and Dorchester gives them the leeway to shine. And Claudia Dain not only shines in this novel, she burns!!! What a super read!!
There is a trend toward the light whimsical historicals and I utterly adore to leader of this pack Lynsay Sands. But while I cannot wait for one of her new books to come out, I also love 'heavy' historicals such as Danegeld by Susan Squires (both Dorchester writers), and Claudia Dain gives one super strong historical.
Writing of a period that many have overlooked in the romance market: the void left as the Romans pulled out of England and the Saxons rose to power - she paints the canvass not only with strong bold, sure strokes, but with vivid colours.
I have been in writers chat several times with Dain, and found her a lively person with a super sense of humour, but she also loves history, and being a history lover myself, I was intrigued recently as she discussed To Burn. So naturally, I rushed out to buy it and am very glad I did.
She gives us two very strong alpha leads. She is Melania, the roman woman who detests the loathsome Saxon. He is Wulfred, the Saxon who kills her father and destroys her villa and hates all things Roman. She calls him Oaf, he calls her snake and they utterly HATE each other. He finds her hiding in a bolthole, and sets it afire to force her out. In Valiant, almost Viking mentality, she accepts dying there, because it would be on her own terms, not his. He plans on killing her, but sees that is just want she wants. A quick death in warrior fashion. And since he hates her and all she stands for, he perversely denies her the death she so wants, and makes her his slave intending to break her spirit before he grants her death.
But he finds breaking her spirit an impossible task. She is constantly provoking him with diatribes against him and all things Saxon, she scratches, kick and bites anytime he gets near, deliberately trying to provoke his temper into murdering her. She continually tries to kill herself. Not as a Ophelia whiner I-cannot-face-life, but as a strong warrior wanting life and death on her own terms, and if she cannot have life as she knows it, then will faces death with open arms. So Wulfred spend more time tries to stop her, than breaking her spirit.
These are two well-drawn, uncompromising characters for an uncompromising period in Britain's history. And this will be a book you will remember long after you put it down.
Thank you the super book, Claudia!! And I am off to buy the rest of your works!!

Beautiful prose but no soul
By A Customer
I've only read two of Claudia Dain's books. The first one varied widely in its pacing and the writing style; this one has a smooth pace and is consistently written with an ear tuned to the music of language.
Unfortunately, the characters in "To Burn" are beautiful but not sympathetic. They spend a huge amount of time inside their own heads. I'd rather see them doing something that would make me begin to like them.
Logic holes abound. Our heroine professes to be Christian but her sporadic observations of the religion only scratch the surface when the plot deems it convenient and even more, quite unforgiveably, result in a sudden deus ex machina for the ending, a sure sign of lazy plotting and possible disregard for the reader.
In the future if I pick up another Dain novel, I'd like to see her give us real motivations for her characters. Why does the hero linger here? It's never convincingly explained. I'd like to see her set her novels in the real time, where people had to work to survive instead of loll about -- especially when their world has just been destroyed. I'd like to see the dialogue written as if real people could have said it. Barbarians shouldn't speak like college professors. I'd like to see logic holes cleaned up: how is it that one person in this novel can learn fluent Latin from a year's stay in a very confined and limited environment, but the heroine's pitiful grasp of Saxon varies from scene to scene and never improves despite being surrounded by Saxons and put in a situation where it is to her advantage to learn what they're saying?
Most of all I'd like to see characters whom I could care about and not people who seem to still reside only on the flat surface of a romance novel cover. (Although the gentleman on this book's cover is a fine sight to see. Too bad he was posed so awkwardly.)

"To Burn" 's fire fizzled and sputtered...
By Summer Belle
Okay... let me get this straight. Wulfred kills her father, destroys her Villa, and is a rapist and murderer. He hates all things Roman because he was once enslaved in Rome.
Melonia watches her father's murderer take charge of her home, she is enslaved, and has to share her home with the "unwashed Saxon masses".
There's even a line where Melonia thinks about her father's face was fading from her memory to be replaced with Wolfred's face.
Can anyone else say Patty Hearst?
It really troubles me to give this low of a rating to an author I've grown to love. Between "The Holding" and "The Marriage Bed", I was hooked.
But "To Burn" did nothing for me. The conflict in this book is HUGE. Insurmountable. Beyond resolution in this one book. Both characters hate each other. They're on opposite sides of the fence. North vs South. East vs West. Whichever - they are totally opposed to the other's lifestyle, religion, language, and very existence.
I've thought of trying to compare this to a "Romeo and Juliet" kind of story, but that didn't work. Romeo may have killed Juliet's cousin, but he didn't do it in cold blood. The Montague's and the Capulet's may have hated each other for years, but Romeo and Juliet themselves didn't hate each other.
So, they hate each other. That's the conflict. Where's the resolution? Neither character grows, accepts, or adapts to the other. She still hates all things Saxon... except Wulfred. He still hates all things Roman... except Melonia.
"To Burn" was not what I had hoped for with Ms. Dain's latest book.

Great Textbook
By Adam
I used this book for my Psychology and the law class and I was very pleased. Most textbooks are dry and dull but this one keeps your interest and reads like an enjoyable book. Each chapter has a few real life stories incorporated to the particular lesson and presents the information in a clear and understandable way such that even if you weren't supplementing the book with a lecture, you would still be able to fully comprehend what is written.

When a medical discovery has horrifying side-effects allowing the blind to see nightmare visions of the future, Dr. Suzannah Lloyd plans to operate on a tormented artist--but a madman is stalking her, determined to prevent the operation. Reprint. LJ.

From Publishers Weekly
An intriguing concept--a microchip inserted in the brain to cure blindness that also allows certain recipients to see the future--falls short of its potential in this poorly paced, digressive thriller. Suzannah Lord saw her career as a neurosurgeon destroyed when she resisted the sexual advances of the microchip's inventor, Roland Lancaster. Several years later, she discovers the chip does a lot more than cure blindness when she meets painter Andrew Dugan, one of the first to receive the implant, who is now desperately troubled by visions. Suzannah begins an investigation that results in a series of confrontations with an old classmate named Archer Montross, himself a chip recipient and now member of a rogue band of CIA operatives who see its side-effects as the ultimate espionage tool. Buried in the repetitive plot, which wanders aimlessly from one near-escape to another, are some interesting questions about the effects of knowing the future on individual sanity and creativity. Dugan, for example, loses his desire to paint when he can "see" the finished work before he even picks up a brush. Overall, unfortunately, this is a disappointing effort from the author of Before I Wake . First serial to Good Housekeeping.
Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Spruill, who showed promise with Before I Wake ( LJ 3/15/92) and Painkiller ( LJ 4/1/90), continues in the vein of medical suspense. A microchip implanted in the brain can restore sight even to those blind from birth. The FDA will approve the microchip only if an experiment with 50 volunteers is successful without any devastating side effects. Of course there are side effects: some in the experiment begin seeing the future in alarming ways. They seek out Suzannah Lord, a neurosurgeon involved with the implanting, who has been discredited by the head researcher. The CIA becomes interested, as does a criminal element, both with guns blazing. Suzannah's trials soon rival the perils of Pauline in escapes that strain credibility, weakening the story. Someday Spruill, who has a Ph.D. in clinical psychology, may master the art of breathing life into his characters. When and if he does, his books will be best sellers. Still, this is a satisfactory novel, unusual and provocative. First serial to Good Housekeeping ; previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 11/15/93.
- Ralph DeLucia, Willoughby Wallace Lib., Stony Creek, Ct.

From Booklist
Few heroines of recent novels have nearly been done in by a polar bear. This is not the only unusual event in this tightly written, fascinating yarn in which clinical psychologist Spruill shows he knows how to portray people and develop a story naturally. Aspiring embryo neurosurgeon Suzannah Lord gets tossed out of her residency by an arrogant chief surgeon, Roland Lancaster, after refusing to have sex with him. She had been helping the pioneering Lancaster in an NIH project that involved planting microchips in the brains of patients with visual problems. By accident, one of the recipients, a CIA agent, discovers a major side effect--the ability to foresee the future--that he and his superior keep a secret and contrive to give to several of their most efficient agents by having chips implanted in them; their aim is to build a potentially threatening oligarchy of seers. A microchip-implanted artist, an investigative reporter, and Lord's naval-officer sister help the good guys fight back. A clever, threefold chase prepares the way for a dramatic climax at the Washington Monument. William Beatty

NO SOUL TO TAKE
By Michael Butts
Spruill's follow up to "Before I Wake", is a somewhat far-fetched story of what happens when a microchip is developed that helps near blind people see better, but has a strange side effect: you can see the future. Interesting concept, but it's handling is mundane. Heroine Suzanna Lord is feisty, for sure, but she's also pretty stupid and careless, finding herself in more than one predicament she should have known better. The most ridiculous scenario is when she tries to pass herself off as her military sister in order to get to the chief of the CIA. She also has a lover named Jay who is tormented about something he didn't do in the Gulf War, and finds herself falling for one of the microchips recipients, an impossibly handsome artist named Andrew Dugan. The pacing of the book is a little slow, and some of the dialogue is forced and derivative. The main villain, Archer Mosser, is also cookie cutter monster, replete with damaged face and a muscled body. There aren't many surprises and one can see the "surprise" ending a mile away. But, if you are in the mood for fluff, this is adequate. I don't think Spruill has ever caught on, since I'm the first to review this book, which is almost ten years old!!
