The province has long been recognised as one of the first millennium's political hot spots. Splendid single finds, though never before surveyed comprehensively, offer a rough idea of where elite settlements might be sought. But little has been known about individual elite settlements in first millennium �sterg�tland. Not one of the Beowulfian mead-halls of this book's title, the ostentatious manorial buildings where the Late Iron Age elite lived their lives and played their roles, has been identified in the field. Yet they are easily recognised elsewhere through their architecture and associated find categories. This book aims at beginning to remedy �sterg�tland's regional absence of mead-halls, being an investigation of the province's internal political geography during the period AD 375-1000. Where were the elite settlements? MARTIN RUNDKVIST is an archaeologist who received his doctorate from the University of Stockholm in 2003. He is mainly active in research into the Bronze and Iron Ages in Scandinavia. Furthermore he edits the journal Fornv�nnen and keeps the internationally popular Aardvarchaeology blog.

No mead-halls, but worth reading

Be warned, this book does not actually describe the excavation of any mead hall. It is a good survey of the archaeology of the agricultural areas of first millenium �sterg�tland, by the author of the blog Aardvarchaeology. It will be useful to Boewulf scholars in understanding first millenium land use. Even if you are only a fan of Grimm's fairy tales or the Lord of the Rings, It will give you an idea of what was meant by leaving the residential palace for the fortified stronghold in the forests and mountains.
The cover art is a charming photo of a mead hall and barrow, with a 21 st century wind turbine on the horizon. There are decent photos and illustraions of first millenium metal work for SCA or Viking re-enactors, or archaeologists. A brief story on page 118 mentions a barrow containing "a charcoal layer...of which a blacksmith is said to have made use for his trade, but had to desist, when there was inexplicable noise in the smithy and his wife fell ill".
This is a specialist's work, and it could use a good index. An essential work if you live in �sterg�tland.
A fun read if you like archaeology of this era, or Germanic language folklore, or craft small scale metalworking.

Most recommended learn to crochet book ever. Seriously.

I purchased this as a gift for my sister-in-law who is just learning to crochet. She was looking for a book that would be good for more visual learners like herself as well as something that would work for her daughter who does better with written instructions. I already own this book even though I'm more of a knitting gal but sometimes I will try and bust out a large granny square baby blanket for friends and it has always been a great reference book for me. I can quickly flip to the right page and just review the illustrated instructions for the stitch that I can't quite remember how to do.
As well as being my favorite learn to crochet resource his book was also the number one learn to crochet (for adults) book that I recommended when I worked at a yarn store. Many adults and teens got a kick out of the title and the writing style is really entertaining. It has many different patterns not only patterns for scarfs and other rectangular items and it has very clear instructions in both a written and illustrated format as well as some nice history and general information on yarn types and different hook types.

I bought this and haven't used it for one dang thing. Every time I try, I end up confused. I ended up teaching my self had a crochet watching YouTube videos and looking at patterns on Pinterest. I don't know… The diagrams in the book just weren't helpful to me. I've made a couple of afghans some, some doll blankets, lots dish cloths, decorative pillow covers (I would consider myself to be an beginning/intermediate crocheter), and have a TON to learn, but I still wouldn't go back to this book to learn new stitches, projects, etc.

I am a knitter that has struggled to learn crochet. This book covers the small details that have hung me up in the past, such as where EXACTLY do you insert the crochet hook in different situations? Stoller explains clearly and precisely all of the little details that a new crocheter needs to know. It is as if she got into my head and answered all the questions and addressed all the issues that I have had while learning how to do crochet. While this book covers very well the first steps involved in the learning process, it also covers more complex stitches, construction of garments and following patterns. I am finally on my way to reading crochet patterns and producing worthwhile items! Highly recommended reading for the novice and more advanced fiber artist.

Charming art, charming mathematics, unfocused exposition

Renaissance artists learned how to draw perspective images. Perhaps the realisation of how to draw checkered floors sparked the development. Then one learned to draw perspective views of cubes and prisms and such. By approximation, these techniques could be of use when drawing more complex bodies and well, but apparently many artists preferred mechanical tricks instead (eye line strings, reference grids, etc.). Indeed, the mathematical sophistication of the Renaissance artists should not be over stated; a detailed 15-page analysis of one of the most celebrated perspective frescos, Masaccio's Holy Trinity, fails to reveal much mathematical depth ("we are dealing with a painting not a theorem"; p. 59). A notable exception is Piero della Francesca, who was a competent mathematician and wrote his time's most sophisticated treatise on perspective, earning him 50 pages here, but even he compromised mathematical precision in some of his paintings. The convergence of mathematics and art was at least as fruitful in the other direction. Desargues saw the importance of the idea of perspectivity in geometry, where it unifies the theory of conics and paves the way for essentially projective theorems such as "Desargues' Theorem".

This is basically a scholarly book, but at times one gets the impression that Field is more interested in showing off pretty pictures and telling amusing side stories rather than explaining the development of ideas on perspective in a clear and structured manner. One of the largest images is a full page reproduction of Titian's portrait of Ranuccio Farnese (p. 153), which has nothing to do with perspective except that the subject once had a book dedicated to him. Why not use the space for more relevant paintings instead? For example, Piero della Francesca's An Ideal Town would go beautifully with the discussion of his perspective treatise. Discussing Taylor's work on perspective, Field remarks that Taylor introduced the term "vanishing point" but then says "Taylor does not quite explain what is supposed to vanish at the vanishing point ... The readers he was addressing were presumably not expected to be so literal minded as to ask that question" (p. 229). I would say that more probably the readers were not expected to be so stupid as to fail to grasp this very simple concept by themselves; but that aside: if Field had wanted to explain ideas rather than to poke fun at people, she could simply have quoted from Taylor's 1719 edition, where, on page 15, he explains: "the further any object is off, upon any line, the smaller is its projection ... and when it comes to this point, its magnitude vanishes, because the original object is at an infinite distance. This is easily conceived by imagining a man to be going from you in a long walk, who appears to be smaller and smaller, the further he goes." (Incidentally, this would also have made clear that, to Taylor at least, a vanishing point is not the same as a centric point, as Field mistakenly implies.)

This is the ideal book for anybody who wants to really understand how painting lead to the birth of projective geometry. It's a sholarly book, and at times it requires some effort on your part, but you will be highly rewarded in the end!

Good Book on Writing Well

A very good book, but not a great book on writing style and how to write well (or at least better than before you read the book). Covers the basics of tone, grammar, and structure, but lacking in good examples. Only one example of a passive vs. active sentence was given, and the lone example wasn't very clear. Still, a good writing style guide.

Fairly good basic text on the rules of writing

This book presented the material clearly and simply and didn't get bogged down with unnecessary details. The author's chatty tone and attempts at humor gets a bit tired, and the organization jumps around a bit. But overall it is a good reference to have and, once you've gone through it, you are clear about the elements of good writing.

SN required to protect the subgrade = 6.5, which is greater than SN provided (=4.014): Not satisfactory !

Thickness of subbase should be equal to - or greater than:
