New literature that will stand the test of time

Once in a while I come across a novel that makes me wish I were teaching again, a novel that begs for questions and discussion. This is one of those novels. Its brevity belies its complexity. Its characters -- main, minor, fleeting, and implied -- represent humanity as it is today. Its premise, while fanciful, creates the opportunity for readers to wonder if we have the courage to radically change how we view others and the world in which we all live. I read in a review that this is a hopeful novel and initially I was suspicious that a novel centering on the plight of innocent refugees fleeing violence and death could ultimately proffer a hopeful message. But hope there is despite the literal impossibility of its central plot device. The doors are a metaphor; do we have the courage to open them to those with the courage to walk through? Told in a spare but descriptive narrative, Mr. Hamid challenges his readers to open their minds to the possibilities that the future holds.

A book to reflect on

Exit West is one of those novels that I’m still puzzling over, some time after finishing it. The author makes some interesting choices in terms of technique. So this review is really my reflections up to now rather than a settled opinion.

First, Exit West is narrated by an omniscient narrator with a cool, detached voice. This adds to the sense that the events it describes are normal, unsurprising. It tells the story of Saeed and Nadia, who live in an unnamed city in a country on the brink of civil war.

Saeed has light stubble and Nadia wears a black robe, at a time when people could still choose what to wear, ‘so these choices meant something’. They become involved and in contrast to their appearances, it is Nadia who has broken with expectations by living independently, estranged from her family, while Saeed still lives at home.

At first they do the things new couples do. They text incessantly. They use recreational drugs by moonlight. They listen to music and negotiate their attitudes to sex. But the civil war takes first their freedom and then their safety. It seems like the only option is to escape.

Saeed and Nadia leave through one of the ‘doors’ by which refugees leave war zones, generally after handing over money to traffickers. The ‘doors’ open and close apparently randomly, offering an abrupt dislocation from one place to another. It suggests something magical, without human agency, while the reality is anything but.

While Saeed and Nadia’s home city is unnamed, the events described feel contemporary and real. However the places where they go after they leave, which are named, known locations, are subtly different, as if we’re looking at a possible future or an alternate reality. They are in social upheaval, they are more segregated, even less hopeful than they are now.

Then there are vignettes throughout the book interrupting the main narrative, showing immigrants and refugees in other regions suddenly appearing through doors, as if to remind us that this is happening everywhere, all the time.

Saeed and Nadia are well realised characters, at once unique and recognisable. As they leave their home the narrative fragments and their stories become less absorbing. It is as if in becoming refugees, whose main preoccupation is survival, whose choices are circumscribed, they have less time to be psychologically complex and interesting, not only to a reader but perhaps to themselves.

So while the story didn’t engage me throughout the book, the ideas did, and still do. Exit West challenges you to think in new ways about a familiar issue, to question what you understand when you see generic terms like refugee or migrant applied to millions of individuals, who each has their home, their emotional life, their door, and has to make the decision to take that chance, or not, while they can.

Exquisite and provocative

I read The Reluctant Fundamentalist several years ago and it seemed well intentioned and generally well written, but awkwardly constructed, so conscious, as it were, of its own message and meaning. So I was curious and interested in his newest release. I wanted to see if he had decided to take the gloves off and let the story's meaning find its own center.
And wow! A beautiful and provocative story emerges from these pages, one that forces any self aware reader to ponder the meaning of displacement, of belonging, of love - even of nation-states and their necessity, and he does it all, gently but firmly as he follows the lives of Saeed and Nadia, two young adults who fall at least a little bit in love while war breaks out in their (unnamed) home country and wind up foraging not only for their existences but for their lives.
Hamid's ability to knit a bit of magical realism in even as reality becomes increasingly gritty and grim was what delighted me most. It was unexpected, and yet absolutely necessary to the development of the narrative (or was it?). The main characters come to life sturdily beneath Hamid's hand, and his settings and situations are eminently believable.
My only reservation is that he leaves far more questions behind than he does answers - although that may be just me wishing to have a nice, deep conversation about this book over a cup of coffee.
A beautiful and terrible world lives within these pages, and it deserves to be widely read.

Very informative and entertaining

After reading this book, I found out a lot that I didn't recall about that time frame of being a fan during the 70's. I think the author took an honest look at each individual season and in using various references , he came to the conclusions that challenged his initial thoughts , before he started writing. I wonder if gb had acquired Archie manning back in 74, how the franchise might have turned out. I don't think this book could have been appreciated in the 70's or 80's. Definitely a good time to have reflected upon the game back then. Thanks

I would have enjoyed this a lot more without the constant distraction of misplaced words and terrible punctuation. It's a shame, because the author is clearly knowledgable and passionate about the subject. But this reads like a first draft, and was simply not ready for publication. Do your subject justice -- fix the mistakes, and it could be a worthy chronicle of a largely forgotten chunk of NFL history.

Revenge is sweet

Zygmunt Miloszewski's `A Grain of Truth' is what Bitter Lemon Press is all about - the cream of European detective fiction perfectly translated into English. Among English detective writers, only P.D. James matches Miloszewski's elegance and style of plot and writing. Teodor Szacki, the cultured, thoughtful, lonely protagonist is James' Adam Dalgliesh.
If not for Bitter Lemon Press, much of the best of modern European literature - yes, whodunits can be literature - would be unavailable to us. As it is, we have a classic tale of gruesome murders, jealousy and long-simmering hate. Set in Sandomierz, a claustrophobic small-town in Poland, the story has the added ingredient of continuing anti-Semitic bigotry in this country of so many of the Nazi extermination camps.
May there be as many more murder cases for Szacki to unravel as Dalgliesh has solved over the years.

Second in the series

"A Grain of Truth", by Polish author Zygmunt Miloszewski, is the second in his Teodor Szacki series. Set in Poland, Szaki is a Warsaw-born state prosecutor, who after his personal life takes a hit in Warsaw, moves to a beautiful town, Sandomierz, to "start over". He brings, along with his battered feelings, his well-earned reputation as a crime-solver. And there are some real crimes to be solved in the city of Sandomierz.

Sandomierz is located in southeast Poland and is a real city with a rather interesting history. It was the home, before WW2, of a fairly large Jewish population and a visitor can find today remnants of that society. Most of the Jews of Sandomierz and the surrounding area were killed by the German occupiers, and the complicity of the native Polish Catholic has been questioned in the past 70 years. Certainly, the few Jewish survivors who returned after the war were not welcomed home by the Polish Catholics who had, in many cases, appropriated their homes and businesses. That's a different story from the three murders that occur in the city in 2008 that Szaki and his joint legal/police team are charged with solving. But the problems of the past directly affect the crimes of today, as Teodor Szaki discovers.

Sandomierz, the real place, is home to a real church with anti-Semitic art work on the walls. One large picture shows medieval Jews engaging in blood lust; killing Christians for their blood in rather horrifying ways. Another large picture shows 365 days of the year and the ghastly deaths of saints on each day. This blood-libel myth, combined with murders of three Polish Catholics, sends Szaki looking in directions not normally indicated in a murder investigation. All three murders were done in ways that would indicate a Jewish killer. In modern day Poland, in a city with it's own dubious history of anti-Semitism, bringing up the sins of the past is troublesome part of the case.

Author Miloszewski does an admirable job combining the Poland of today with the one of the past. His characters are splendidly drawn and are all interesting. The plot is somewhat lacking in coherence, which may be more the problem of the translator than of the author. The somewhat-incoherence of the plot is not off-putting; it's just sort of there around the edges. The reader may question a minor plot point that doesn't seem to fit. The book was probably a bit better in the original Polish.

But "A Grain of Truth" is well worth reading. I'm going back and reading the first in the series - "Entanglement" - and I hope Miloszewski writes more in the series.

A Tangled History/Mystery

I know, two five stars in a row......but this book is superb on every level.
First the characters...Prosecutor Teodor Szack, forty years of age, successful in Warsaw, successful in a provincial district, divorces his wife and relocates. His character's view of the rule of law, the Republic, his relationship with his daughter, and the way he carries out his duties make him a fascinating protagonist. The secondary characters-the suspect(s), a police Inspector who tantalizingly may or may not be Jewish, his bosses who happen to be female, and his lover are all extremely well drawn.
Next, a tutorial on the tangled history between Poles and Jews. He considers the phenomenon of the "blood libel," and nascent anti-Semitism in a country virtually without Jews. The grim picture is offset by the optimism of an Israeli Rabbi, of Polish descent, who has "returned" to Poland. His perspective and cautious optimism prevent this book from becoming too one dimensional.
Finally, the mystery is extremely well written. The plot is outstanding. The misdirection is fair to the reader. The solution does not appear contrived. In fact, it was always there awaiting discovery by a particularly discerning reader. (Not this one).
This was simply a very enjoyable experience. The translation is also superb

Unique, theory-driven, concept-driven life-span development text

This text on life-span development, by a British Occupational Psychologist, is heads above the usual generally atheoretical review of ages and stages. Sugerman discusses methods of developmental research and the grounding of developmental psychology in multiple academic disciplines (biology, psychology, sociology, etc.). She astutely reviews different conceptual approaches to life-span development (i.e. stage theories, change theories, constancy theories, and the latest narrative approaches), with a good analysis of strengths and weaknesses in each. There is a strong focus on development in adulthood and ageing adults which belies the usual concept of decline with ageing. This is an excellent text for students who have had an introductory developmental psychology course and are ready to see how the field really works. It is also an excellent resource for instructors who want to strengthen their own conceptual grasp of the field.

The sex scenes are ok not the best details. My biggest let down with this series is the fact that until the this book you don't truly find out it is a pirate themed series. The second part of it that is a let down is the fact that ok so now it is a pirate themed series, but other then being on a boat nothing major has happened. They might as well be living in a house rather then being on a boat. I should ask for my money back but that would be a disservice to other readers cause then I would not have the right to really post this review.

I would strongly recommend Ian Dunt's excellent guide to what happens next.

Dunt has taken the extraordinary step of asking a set of experts what they think about matters of law.

This is one of the few books of the set to face forwards rather than backwards and it is all the better for that. I learnt a lot, which I find often happens when I have the humility to listen to experts.

Admirably brief and necessarily brutal.

Whatever your position during the referendum, you ought to read Dunt because he is willing to face uncomfortable facts. The only country in the world with absolute sovereignty is North Korea. Everyone else must make compromises. The only question for us is how bad a compromise we must endure.

...As for all the favours the right expects the US and Australia to give us, Dunt imagines, perfectly plausibly, the reality will be US trade officials telling our hastily assembled team of novice trade negotiators:

The UK is in a position of unique and historic vulnerability. Its economy is facing the most significant shock since the Second World War. It has no time. It has no negotiating capacity. But Washington wants to help. It is prepared to rush a trade deal through Congress. It could take less than two years. But for this to be achievable, the UK needs to accept all of its demands. It is likely in the so called echo chambers that selectively this book would be both widely toasted or roundly scorned. And that's where this book must live as a warning or a guide. As call to sense and not just a post truth fantasy. Use reason as you seek knowledge and not meaningless phrases that brexit means.

About the Author
JACQUELINE M. LABBE teaches and researches in the area of British Romantic Poetry and Poetics at the University of Warwick, UK. She is the author of the first scholarly book on Charlotte Smith's poetry and of numerous articles on Smith and Wordsworth. She has written three monographs, edited and contributed to four major collections of essays, and edited Smith's poetry and her novel The Old Manor House (1794).
