What's Your Leadership Story?

The story of Herb Greenberg, founder of Caliper, will inspire you to reflect deeply on your own leadership story. Patrick Sweeney is a master storyteller: At times What You Aren’t Seeing reads like a juicy novel and at other times it reads like a Harvard Business School case study. I found myself answering the reflection questions at the end of each chapter to uncover my own leadership story. If you are a coach, you will also find the questions useful in helping your clients search inside themselves for their own leadership story.

I must admit I was skeptical when I first scanned the Table of Contents and saw a chapter titled “Sports”. As a female entrepreneur and lifelong student of leadership I often tire of sports analogies because they are typically about male teams and I don't identify with them. While there is quite a bit written about the Brooklyn Dodgers who were influential in Greenberg’s childhood, I was pleasantly surprised to learn the results of one of Caliper’s studies. Using their in-depth personality assessment, as well as interviews of female leaders in the US and UK, they found that women demonstrate leadership behaviors, such as listening and collaborating, that make them uniquely suited to be successful in today’s global marketplace.

A MUST READ For Leaders and Entrepreneurs!

Very engaging book that provides leadership insights for business owners and entrepreneurs. I found this book to be very informative, entertaining, and educational. I was particularly interested in leadership abilities and found the book helpful in determining leadership qualities and traits. Not only does the book Chronicle the life of CEO Herb Greenberg, but uses his story as a backdrop for important leadership lessons. Each chapter includes self-discovery questions to guide you through assessing your own story and where the potential to lead originates. These questions help to guide your own thought processes and challenge deeply help beliefs that may be holding you back. If you're looking for an entertaining read that will help you on your leadership journey, I highly recommend this book.

A Biography the Leads to Insight

This biography of Herb Greenberg does an excellent job of using his story to help bring out one's own authentic self. It is well-written and well-edited, and a pleasure to read. I left off one star because the book assumes that every reader holds theories of psychology with the same level of "faith" as the author and the subject. I found much to apply, but have misgivings on some psychological theories, so some sections didn't resonate with me. Whether you're from Brooklyn or not, it's worth the read!

Paul Bakker is a software architect for Luminis Technologies. His current focus is on building modular enterprise applications and the cloud. He believes that modularity and the cloud are the two main points we have to deal with to bring technology to a next level, and is working on making this possible for main stream software development. Today he is working on educational software focussed on personalised learning for high school students in the Netherlands. He is also responsible for pushing technology forward. Luminis strongly believes in open source and all the technology development they are doing happens in the open source community. Paul is an active contributor on projects such as Amdatu, Apache ACE, JBoss Forge and BndTools. He has a background as trainer on Java related technology and is a regular speaker on conferences.

Bert Ertman is a Fellow at Luminis in the Netherlands. Next to his customer assignments he is responsible for stimulating innovation, knowledge sharing, coaching, technology choices and presales activities.Besides his day job he is a Java User Group leader for NLJUG, the Dutch Java User Group. A frequent speaker on Enterprise Java and Software Architecture related topics at international conferences (e.g. J-Fall, Devoxx, JavaOne, Jfokus, etc) as well as an author and member of the editorial advisory board for Dutch software development magazine: Java Magazine. Enhanced my OSGi Knowledge base

This book covers quite a few topics (BndTools, OSGi, Apache Ace, persistence and many others) and I really enjoyed working through it using BndTools. The author also offers good advice as to why a particular approach was used comparing it to others. If your wanting to learn OSGi or even round off your knowledge on the topic, this is an excellent resource and also very well written.

I found myself pleased to have learned something new and to have successfully worked through the book using Amazons read.amazon.com on my laptop (Mint Linux). The formatting of the book for Kindle was quite usable. I also find myself applying what I've learned to real projects that I'm working on.

The author also offers source code on GitHub and BitBucket. The last section of the book is an appendix to an extensive source code example that's worth getting and figuring out. I'm working through it now.

It's probably a good idea to have a modicum of Java experience and maybe to at least know a little about OSGi.

I don't really write reviews but I consider myself a Java/OSGi enthusiast and consume knowledge on the topic almost daily. I challenge myself to learn new and interesting things on the topic so I can be a good reference source myself; this book is a terrific resource for that.

Catchy title but poor content

Bought this book to see how to use osgi for building cloud ready, horizontally scalable, applications. Book focuses on tooling, negative sides of jee and provides solutions to simple problems. After reading this book I am still not sure how to write elastic osgi applications.

Looks like book focused on talking how osgi is great for modularity, compared to anything else, including java itself but not describing how to solve harder real-life problems already solved by jee - scaling horizontally, running in transactional and distributed environment etc.

Jim Laurier is a prolific artist and illustrator of military subjects. A longtime aviation enthusiast and pilot, he combines his love of history with his flying experiences to create artworks renowned for their historical and technical accuracy. Jim's honors include two Par Excellence Awards from the Experimental Aircraft Association, an award from the US Naval Air Museum, and an award from the Simuflite Training Center in Dallas, Texas. He lives in Keene, New Hampshire.

The greatest WWII fighter book ever written. I bought six for gifts. I have never seen this incredible combination of art, history, technical specifications and dramatic pilot stories combined like this before. This is a groundbreaking work. I enjoyed every minute spent within these pages. You will too.

Art meets history in Fighter! Ten Killer Planes of World War II which is exceptional for its paintings as well as Laurier’s aircraft insight. For each of the chosen WW II Era fighter aircraft Laurier wonderfully paints a few scenes or so readers can vicariously experience the flying, the fighting and field life.

Laurier nicely synthesizes the development of each aircraft type from inception up to the final model with each chief designer named. Aside from the mentioned illustrations a three-view drawing of a particular aircraft as flown by a specific pilot is included along with dual cockpit illustrations (one with labels and one without). Laurier’s research is thorough and references are given as well as personal interviews of famous pilots of these aircraft. The words as well as the art of Fighter! Not Scary, but very interesting to read

I have only done minimal research on the Bell Witch or "Old Kate" so I really cannot vouch for the accuracy of this novel. True the introduction implies that this book is from a long lost document, a first hand account written by Richard Powell, for those of you who are familiar with the tale of the Bell Witch, Richard Powell was the school master who eventually married Betsy Bell. Betsy was the Bell Daughter who was most violently attacked by the witch.

Though many of the accounts in this book mirror those that have been documented, there appears to be some creative license taken. So go into this book viewing as an interesting story BASED on events that may have happened. Some of the events that have not been verified but that occur in this book are the presence of Andrew Jackson and the rather questionable ending. Still this was a very interesting read, and I'm glad I finally sat down and committed to it. I have not seen the movie made from this book, but have been told it is a descent film.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Bell witch tale, it takes place in Tennessee during the settlements. The Bell family found themselves in a financial dispute with Kate Batts, an eccentric neighbor who then proceeded to curse them in public. Soon after the curse, strange events began happening, first starting with noises then as the supernatural occurrence gained strength it began attacking Betsy Bell, the youngest of the daughters. As the poltergeist activity heightened, the towns people were brought in, many who witnessed events and even spoke with the "witch" which they referred to as "Old Kate" after the woman who they assumed had conjured the demon. The ghost or witch could at times be friendly and helpful and at other times deceitful and dangerous.

The idea of using the teacher as the voice was a good choice because he was not a part of the family, so he was not privy to all of the ghost's deeds, but since both his home and the schoolhouse were on the Bell's property, he was present for much of the drama, and witnessed many of the events. Add into this the fact that although she was much younger than he - he was in love with Betsy Bell. This gave him a level of concern beyond that of curious neighbor.

The voice of the book felt genuine, and as a reader, you do feel genuine concern for those involved. And at times you can't help but be enamored by Old Kate with her devilish attitudes and whimsical nature. I felt this was actually a more well written novel than "Amityville Horror" which was also supposed to be a "true" account of a haunting. This one was a far more enjoyable read and was extremely interesting. Though I'm not a believer or dis-believer in the Bell Witch or any other supernatural phenomenon, I would not hold this book up as accurate. Entertaining - yes, enlightening - no. Either way, it was fun to read.

Awesome true story

I grew up near the Bell Witch area and was quite familiar with the story; when I learned that an authenticated account previously unpublished was available, of course I got it. This account tallies with the hundreds of eye-witness events, and has a stunning ending.

Remember that this book was written in the early 1800's and will have the style of the day; also, the writer was not writing a fictional account for amusement--he was writing FACT. To my mind, it's an excellent read, and fascinating because, frankly, if it's not true, then literally hundreds of people were wrong. A must read for all students of the unknown!

Powell Speaks Up!

This is the book that accompanies the motion picture starring Donald Sutherland and Sissy Spacek. The novel is a found manuscript that purports to be written by Richard Powell, who married Betsy Bell, who was a target of the supernatural forces that haunted the Bell farm and eventually killed her father, John Bell.

Powell tells the story from the viewpoint of one who actually witnessed the events. The story follows the major accepted facts of the case, and makes no denial of any claim set forth by others. It does however, mention that John Bell was excommunicated from the church he helped found on a charge of unjust usury in his dealings with Kate Batts. This has resulted in John Bell losing his good name as a man who owed no one anything, and many shunned him. Some books, like Martin Ingram's paint John as the "salt of the earth." This one reveals him as a man who has had problems and strives to make the best of it; accepting the judgement of both the court and the church.

While Powell does not deny that any of the haunting took place, and indeed confirms that it did, he leaves this journal for his daughter to explain the real reason the "witch" came and why it tormented John and Betsy Bell. If you have seen the movie, you know what transpired, if not I won't spoil the reveal for you.

Could it have been as Powell recounts? Possible, perhaps, from a certain point of view. But if so there ought to be thousands of these "witches" reported throughout American as many men are guilty of sharing John Bell's crime. Was there some reason other than Powell's explanation for the phenomena? There certainly could be. And last, could it all have been a hoax? If so, it wasn't perpetrated by the Bell family, as they suffered horrible things. But it is a foregone conclusion that John Bell was a hard man and disliked by some. How this hoax would have been accomplished is a puzzle that would have to involve multiple people working as one. This is possible, but unlikely.

good overview of the main issues

Software engineering is to computer science what engineering is to physics, as the author suggests. Here, the emphasis is on a higher level than, say, the crafting of algorithms. The scope is for systems analysis, design and implementation. He explains that the traditional waterfall method had many shortcomings. Its monolithic stages often proved unwieldy.

The book goes into alternatives. It also gives a good overall treatment of such ideas as formal specification and architectural design. With an entire chapter focusing on the key ways to have distributed systems architectures. Unsurprisingly, CORBA gets the most extensive description. A reflection of the amount of effort that has gone into using it since the late 80s. However, there is scant mention of its drawbacks. Most important of which has been that the exchange of binary data has been very brittle.

He mentions p2p and Web Services, as contrasting approaches. Where the latter uses XML to exchange data in a readable format. This has been widely seen as a big advantage over CORBA, but the book doesn't mention it. Given the continued rise in Web Services, perhaps a future edition of the book could give it more coverage?

The most controversial part of the text might be the section on Extreme Programming. Its characteristics are well described. But perhaps not enough on its disadvantages. Like the idea of collective ownership of code. Not all programmers have the same ability or expertise. Some programmers are far better than others. It is very bad to have a tyro unwittingly change code for which she has insufficient understanding. While the author may not necessarily agree with this, he should at least describe it.

Other sections of the book, especially on testing software and validating critical system parts, are quite lucid and should excite little disagreement.

One of the best books I've read

Concise is the best word to describe it. Software Engineering covers a broad range of topics - what are software engineers, documentation, designing, architecture (types and methods) - this book is pretty much my bible on all things software engineering.

Here are some of my recommendations:

Professors: This book is best accompanied if you assign a semester long project. My prof did this and it placed the book into a different light. Half the things don't make sense if you simply read the book such as Data Flow Models or even Project Management, but when you assign a project and coincide the project with the material in the book, it's 100 times more helpful and it elucidates the material more and more.

Students: This book covers a lot, so get ready to learn new terms and methods. This book covers Project Management, which helped me out alot. For the most part, it gives you good material on how to write good documentation as well as methods and styles for how to design or architect software. Read, read, read is the best advice I can give you.

Overall, Amazon's ratings go only as far as 5 stars, I'd give this book a 10. It's a keeper in my library and a book that I'll be referencing for years to come.

Probably Is Not Out of Date

Almost as bland as the tenured professor who taught my third-year course in University computer science. Perhaps jaded is more of a proper term.

Was a good reference before the Internet showed up.
