This is likely one of the best cookbooks out there for soups, and a couple non-soup items. New Covent Gardens Soup Company is known for putting out some very imaginative, tasty, inexpensive all natural soups in the UK grocery stores. They're fresh and delicious. This is finally the way to see many of their soups on your table without having to fly overseas to go to a UK grocery store. It contains many of their most popular staple soups, their seasonal varieties, and some of their limited edition soups on your own table, made by your own hand.

The directions are clear, concise, simple to follow, and yield some wonderful results. Only thing that may be an issue is the fact that the book was written for a UK audience, so you should have a measuring cup that reads in both metric and standard, and there are a couple recipes where the measurement is specified in a weight instead of volume. Also be aware that there are a few vegetables that are named differently in the UK. Aubergine is eggplant, courgettes are zucchini, swede is rutabaga - I believe those are the only vegetables that may be confusing for people in the US.

Imaginative, but needs proof reading!

Unique, imaginative and simple recipes. Would have given it 5 stars, but I have now found more than one editing error--for example the Red Lentil and Chickpea Dhal does not even have chickpeas in it's list of ingredients, nor in the instructions beneath the ingredient list. The Savoy Cabbage and Turnip lists 45 minutes to cook, plus 1 hour "soaking time." However, none of the ingredients need to be soaked (nor do they instruct you to do so in the ingredient list or in the instructions). It's a shame that such a lovely book has not been subjected to what one would consider a normal editing process and I do hope that the authors can at least post corrections on line.

A great winter cookbook

I bought this book last winter and every recipe I've made from it was great. The recipes are clear, easy to follow, and the ingredients are easy to procure. The book gives a time estimate for each recipe, so it is easy to gage what you are committing to. I just made the venison, mushroom, and red wine soup tonight. Fabulous. This book is worth its high price.

Belem and in awe

In this book, Gary shares an incredible experience he had in Belem, Brazil in 2002 while preaching in a large stadium for thousands of people. Funny thing is that I am from belem and I was there on that time to testify all this. I was only a boy at that time, around the age of 17 and I was there serving as one of the translators. Funny thing that I bought this book and I got shocked when I read this part where he shares his experiences there. I'm amazed! I remember seeing him preaching with my friends. He was really rocking out and preaching with such power and authority! I believe more than one thousand people got saved on that day. I feel so blessed by knowing that I was there seeing all that. I didn't know it meant a lot to him. Today Im 32 years old and i live in Oregon, married and I have two kids. It's a delightful surprise when.. I get the book.. I read it.. And he's talking about my hometown and I was there when all that happened!! I was there! I felt like I traveled back in time and I was just living every single second of that special crusade all over again... I read this entire book in 1 hour. Loved it.. Not 5 stars but 10 thousand!

The choir director, however, is revealed to be a malicious pederast, who selects favorites from the choir and subjects them to frequent sexual abuse. The pain that Fee and his friends endure while growing up with this horrible fact, even after the director is imprisoned, is almost unfathomable. But Fee gets through it, although the dread stays with him all his life--through his self-destructive college days and as he courts a succession of lovers. A stunning debut by a thoroughly unique talent

There is a joy in discovering new novels by fresh young writers that compares favorably with the elation of returning to the works of the masters. Alexander Chee has burst onto the scene with a novel unique in language, in mode of storytellng, in nuances of imagery that the oft overused adjective "stunning" feels to be the only appropriate descriptor. Known only to this reader from his contribution to the touching anthology LOSS WITHIN LOSS, Chee emerges here in his debut novel EDINBURGH as fully groomed storyteller, wordsmith, poet, and excavator of the human plight. His ability to wrap a tough story in the atmospheric language that adroitly mirrors the onomatopoeia of the Asian language patterns while enchanting us with the beauty of Korean mythology and anthropomorphism takes what could be a loathsome tragedy and creates a sensitive coming of age and rites of passage tale.
The story is well documented on this site by the editorial and customer reviews and that is adequate to inform you of what lies between the covers of this seemingly short novel. But the story seems only a matrix to explore, with the metaphors of air/earth/fire/water that Chee so consumately weaves in this poetic tapestry, a young man's journey through the abyss and height of self discovery, of sexuality, of ancestral imprints, to the eventual knowledge of his pace in the cosmos.
Consider even the chosen title EDINBURGH: in the state of Maine (and in the state of youth) the main character enters a safe haven library whose ceiling is a fresco of that city in Scotland struck by the Great Plague and whose library contents contain the centuries old last words of a man dying from that disaster. Chee takes that particular moment to let us envision the past and the future of a young man on the journey to self discovery. How perceptions and memories of childhood eventually inform our sense of adult self, how the choices of repetition of pain and old habits can lead to self destruction or, conquering them, foster a spiritual state of grace and resolved peace - these are the gentle lines of thought that tie this wondrously written book tighly together.
Reading EDINBURGH is an ultimate joy, like hearing a new piece of music on its opening performance. Chee appears securely destined to be a very important voice in American literature over the next decades. Read him now, at the beginning, and grow. This is a stunning book.

Beautifully written, sensitively told

This beautifully written novel's subject matter will probably alienate some readers, but I urge you to read this entire review before deciding whether this book is for you.
Twelve year old Aphias Zhe, nicknamed Fee, has a crystalline soprano voice, and so when he auditions for a boys choir, he is immediately accepted. What Fee knows intuitively becomes concrete as the choir director, Big Eric, takes Fee and a few other boys on an outing in the woods: Big Eric is a pedophile who preys on the young boys' vulnerability. Where others cannot, Fee sees right through to the man and his preference for fair-headed boys like Fee's best friend, Peter. Fee, who is part Korean, part Scottish, is not a favorite; he watches mainly from a distance, knowing the danger Big Eric poses but unwilling to articulate it. He hopes that the false front Big Eric has constructed will never crumble for, if it does, Fee fears he will also be revealed for what he is. When the choir director is caught, the wake of his crime crushes his victims, even those who live to adulthood.
As Fee grows up, he appears to recover, but inside he wants to die. He is gay, not because of the choir director's crime but in spite of it. Fee wants love, tenderness, someone who can rival the affection he felt for Peter, and not the predatory sex Big Eric sought. Yet, Fee continues to be haunted by what happened. When as an adult he meets a blonde boy who reminds him of Peter and who, despite his young age, has a connection to what happened long ago, Fee must confront his demons.
While at times overly lyrical, the novel is a delicate coming-of-age story. Chee has a remarkable command of images and language which add rich layers to what could have been a simple plot. The emotion he infuses in his words makes Fee's pain and quest for love universal. If you think only gay men will enjoy this, think again. As a heterosexual woman, I found myself engrossed in this novel and its characters. Ultimately, EDINBURGH is about truth, self, and the yearning for a place in the world.

A Fine First Novel Beautifully Written

I suppose Mr. Chee had no way of knowing this novel would be so topical given the current child molestation scandal in the Catholic Church. He has written a very fine first novel about the horror of molestation told from the child's standpoint. Fee, a Korean-American growing up in Maine, is molested by his choir director Big Eric. Not one to shy away from thorny subjects, Mr. Chee, nevertheless, treats the delicate subject of molestation with restraint and grace. He is very good at creating a certain mood with few words. This novel is full of colors. The dark Fee is attracted to the gold of blondes. White, the color of death, is associated with the absence of color. The final section of the book is entitled "Blue."
My one criticism of this novel is that I was unable to distinguish the voice of Fee from that of the character Waren. Mr. Chee writes so well, however, that it hardly matters. I look forward to his next novel.

fine compilation of writings on bresson

last year i recieved one of the best christmas presents i could ask for: this book. while i wouldnt recommend it to anyone that isnt a bresson fan it holds plenty to mull over for those that are. while a few of the articles are dull and/or pretentious more often than not they are highly illuminating as to the director's methods. there are one or two articles devoted to each of his films and a few that are just about his films in general. this first section of the book ends with bresson's cinematographer for "diary," through to "joan of arc" writing about his love/hate relationship with bresson and an interview with the young man who played the lead in "the devil, probably." the second part of the book contains three interviews with bresson: the paul schrader, which is fidgety and odd; the godard, which is exhaustive, rambling and very enlightening; and the final one whose author slips my mind which is great but unfortunately short (conducted after the completion of what would be bresson's last film, "l'argent"). the final section of the book is basically several directors talking about why they like bresson. this section ranges from short, humorous stories (the fassbinder and aki kaurismaki) to long essays on bresson's style(malle, etc.). other directors quoted in this final section include tarkovsky, bertollucci, wenders, hal hartley, and atom egoyan.

Bresson mania

My personal hero of the aforementioned European art-movie genre -- Robert Bresson -- is the subject of a new book edited by James Quandt. Robert Bresson includes interviews with the director by fellow filmmakers Jean-Luc Godard and Paul Schrader and French film critics Michael Delahaye and Michel Ciment. There are also homages from directors like Martin Scorsese and Rainier Werner Fassbinder, as well as essays by Roland Barthes and Alberto Moravia. One might wonder why such famous and accomplished people took the time to write about a French filmmaker whose movies are not known to the general moviegoing public. The answer is that the late Bresson actually was one of the great figures in cinema. His austere directing style relied on slow and beautiful imagery and much suffering on the part of his main characters, resulting in films that, once experienced, is never forgotten. One can describe Quandt's book the same way

Although the title is an overstatement, Lieberman does offer useful strategies rooted in basic human psychology and supported by numerous studies. For example, a person tends to like you more after he or she does you a favor, not the other way around. (Subconsciously, he assumes that he must like you, since he helped you.) Another tip: to get someone to find you attractive, set the first date in an environment of heightened physical arousal, like an amusement park. Good book.

Great book. I'm a reader and it's usually business and growth related. This book by David Lieberman was very good in that it taught how to communicate. When I first started reading it I got that "dirty" feeling like it was showing me how to manipulate but he goes on to explain that it's not about manipulation but a study on human behavior and reaction. He also talks about how wrong it is to manipulate people for self centered reasons, etc. So that made me feel a little better lol.

Beneficial, Practical but Common Knowledge

The author's promise: "this book contains ... tactics governing human behavior that will let you outsmart, outthink, and outmaneuver... anyone, anyplace, anytime." After reading the book, I am not confident I can outsmart, out-think, or outmaneuver anyone at anyplace and anytime. Instead, I have a greater awareness of what psychological techniques are useful for certain types of situations. Most if not all of the techniques explained in the book are practical but common knowledge.

HOW TO GET PEOPLE TO LIKE YOU
--
The author suggests that you talk with someone when he is in a good mood if you want him to like you. Moreover, the author writes, "countless studies (and common sense) have established that we tend to like more those who like us." The tactics are to establish rapport by matching the person's gestures, rate of speech, and vocal patterns. I agree with the author, it is common sense (and common knowledge).

HOW TO MAKE A GREAT FIRST IMPRESSION?

I found this chapter to be useful and practical. E.g., suppose you ask some one whether they like the way you arranged furniture and the person responds, "I like it." You can then probe deeper by asking, "what would it take for you to love it?" Or you could ask, "how do you think I can make this room look even better?" It seems simple, and it is.

LEADERSHIP

Great leaders, the author states, must be able to identify with followers by appealing to their desires, needs, and wants. A great leader is also a humble individual. The style of great leaders is clarity, simplicity, and directness. Moreover, great leaders respect everyone. It is demonstrated by showing people how terrific they are and not how great the leader is. People will think you are charismatic when they feel that you make them feel important and special.

HOW TO CRITICIZE
--
The ability to criticize effectively without generating additional problems is an art and a science. I think the author offered practical and useful advice on this challenging and important ability.
1) Show you care, 2) do so in private, 3) preface criticism with a compliment), 4) criticize the act and not the person, 5) believe the person did the act unwittingly, 6) share responsibility for the act, 7) suggest a solution, and 8) tell the person he is not alone in the act. Additionally, a good amount of time should have passed from when the act occurred to when you criticize.

CONCLUSION
--
In closing, I did enjoy the book but found it to be less useful than I anticipated and what the author's claims were. Nevertheless, I think it was beneficial and I am happy I read it. I was expecting more. You will obtain practice suggestions on how to handle certain types of situations but most of the suggestions are common knowledge.

Self Help Book With Excellent Sections and Highly Manipulative Sections Best for Detecting When Somebody Tries to Manipulate You

I learned a lot and for that the book is worth 5 stars. Be warned however that some parts seem to advocate becoming flat out manipulative.

The manipulative parts can be extrapolated from the following example. The author suggests that when somebody helps you on a project, you can try to bind them to hanging in there until the project is done by saying: "what I appreciate about you is that when you help others, you always follow through to the end, making sure the project is completed." It occured to me that I've been manipulated this way many times, and now I probably won't fall for it again.

There are numerous responsible suggestions too. For example the notion that the best leaders are those that had leadership thrust upon them rather than seeking the role. It follows that one should try to be prepared to lead and wait until being recruited into a leadership role. Of course this won't apply to all leadership situations, but it is good advice.

One thing I liked about the author was his emphasis on helping others to feel powerful. We don't help our own causes by being arrogant. Leiberman says that we should always try to restore balance in our relationships, not trying to gain without giving something back.

Leiberman understands a lot about psychology and applies this knowledge in this book. I think anybody can learn a lot from this book, justifying its cost.
