Excellent introduction to metal working

I'm an electrical engineer by training, needing to get more informed about sheet metal fabrication and other metal working processes (casting, extrusion and machining). I came across Boljanovic via some online research and decided to give his text a try. I haven't made it all the way through (have read 50 of 420+ pp so far), but it has been quite informative thusfar. The math is reasonable to follow and the book is well organized. Subsequently, I saw a mechanical engineering colleague's copy of Manufacturing Engineering and Technology by Kalpakjian and Schmid which covers more processes -- I'd recommend either and hopefully will get a chance to see a manufacturing operation with these processes in action!

Fargo followed the money and excitement clear across Texas. Trouble is Fargo’s business – other people’s trouble. They know him from Alaska to Panama and the smart ones get out of his way. The ones who aren’t so smart get a gun barrel laid across the nose, or if Fargo’s short on time, they get killed. Fargo kills, but he doesn’t enjoy it. It’s a job. And he’s good at it.


ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Benjamin Leopold Haas was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1926. His imagination was inspired by the stories of the Civil War and Reconstruction as told by his Grandmother, who had lived through both. Ben’s father was also a pioneer operator of motion picture theatres, “ ... so I had free access to every theatre in Charlotte and saw countless films growing up, hooked on the lore of our own South and the Old West.”

Largely self educated (he had to drop out of college in order to support his family), Ben wrote his first story, a pulp short for a western magazine, when he was just eighteen. But when he was drafted into the Army, his dreams of becoming a writer were put on hold. He served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1946, and saw action in the Philippines.

Returning home to Charlotte (and later Sumter, in South Carolina) in 1946, Ben married Douglas Thornton Taylor from Raleigh four years later. The father of three sons (Joel, Michael and John), Ben was working for a steel company when he sold his first novel in 1961. The acceptance coincided with being laid off, and thereafter he wrote full time.

A prolific writer who would eventually pen some 130 books under his own and a variety of pen-names, Ben wrote almost twenty-four hours a day. “I tried to write 5000 words or more every day, scrupulous in maintaining authenticity,” he later said.

Ben wanted to be a mainstream writer, but needed a way to finance himself between serious books, and so he became a paperback writer. Ben’s early pen names include Ben Elliott (his grandmother’s maiden name), who wrote Westerns for Ace; and Sam Webster, who wrote five books for Monarch. As Ken Barry he turned out racy paperback originals for Beacon with titles like The Love Itch and Executive Boudoir. But his agent was not happy about his decision to enter the western market, and suggested he represent himself on those sales. Ben had sent a trial novel to Harry Shorten of Tower Books. Ben’s family remembers it being A Hell of A Way to Die, written for Tower’s new Lassiter series. It was published in 1969, and editor Shorten told his new author to create a western series of his own. The result was Fargo.

The success of Fargo led to the Sundance series. Jim Sundance is a half-Cheyenne gunslinger who takes on the toughest jobs in order to raise funds to fight the corrupt Indian Ring back in Washington. The short-lived John Cutler series followed, and then perhaps Ben’s crowning achievement, the Rancho Bravo novels, published under the name Thorne Douglas.

Ben Haas died from a heart attack in New York City after attending a Literary Guild dinner in 1977. He was just fifty-one.

Fan favourite James Reasoner has hailed Ben as “one of the best action writers of all time”. Another excellent entry in the great FARGO series.

Another great FARGO novel. Like the last couple in the series, this one avoids the "ended too quick" feel of earlier books, and wraps the story in a suitable fashion. While there isn't as much gunplay as in earlier books, I think the story laid out in THE WILDCATTERS is done quite well, and there's a lot of great secondary characters in this particular read. As always, highly recommended.

Great book, not useful on my Thermal PE Exam

As the title states, it was very helpful for the HVAC problems of my PPI Professional Engineer review course. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it...), I didn't use this book at all during my PE exam, as the Thermal Fluid Systems exam was composed of almost 50% Q-dot heat transfer questions.

This book is such a trigger!! Ideas reading it then other day and the author speaks about how the Tibetan monks who reached extremely high levels of consciousness were covered in gold as they left their bodies, to hold their vibration on the earth, the next day on my Facebook thread, the Hustory Channel showed a gold Buddah that was X-rayed and there was a skeleton inside. Swear to God! Cool stuff, I highly recommend all of her books!!!

Authors Joshua Piven and David Borgenicht consulted numerous experts in their fields (they're cited at the end of the book) to discover how to survive various and sundry awful events. Parachute doesn't open? Your best bet for survival is to hook your arms through the straps of a fellow jumper's chute--and even then you're likely to dislocate both shoulders and break both legs. Car sinking in water? Open the window immediately to equalize pressure, then open the car door and swim to the surface. Buried in an avalanche? Spit on the snow--it will tell you which direction is really up. Then dig as fast as you can.

Each survival skill is explained in simple steps with helpful illustrations. Most stress the need to be prepared--both mentally and physically. For example, to escape from quicksand, you will need to lay a pole on the surface of the quicksand, flop on your back atop the pole, and pull your legs out one by one. No pole? No luck. "When walking in quicksand country, carry a stout pole--it will help you get out should you need to."

You've just leapt off a building and, noticing a Dumpster below, you thank your stars that you've spent several hours listening to this cassette, and you can now land in said Dumpster without breaking your back. Although it is rather unlikely that you will ever use any of the material presented in the book how to perform a tracheotomy, or bring a plane in for an emergency landing these things do happen every once in a while. To someone, somewhere maybe. So it couldn't hurt to bone up on some skills, right? Though neither written nor read in a humorous manner, the book nevertheless amuses in a strange way; the decision to group numerous bizarre crises into two hours of tape, not to mention some of the particularly far-fetched scenarios ("How to Leap from a Motorcycle to a Car" or "How to Escape from Killer Bees") often exceed our expectations of absurdity. You can imagine needing to know CPR some day, but how many of us will have the opportunity to wrestle free from an alligator? As a man who has seemingly leapt into Dumpsters and jumped into moving vehicles (or had a stunt double perform these things), Reynolds seems a wise choice for a reader. Unfortunately, his presentation is flat and unenthusiastic, and it sounds like he's reading the material for the first time. Misplaced emphases render several passages difficult to understand. However, Reynolds's familiar voice, combined with the offbeat material, affords some camp appeal in the tradition of outdated high school safety films. Based on the Chronicle paperback.

Initially, this seems like a tongue-in-cheek self-help manual for bizarre situations, and while some of the disastrous encounters might seem farfetched, many will prove to be likely misadventures. Those most apt to be needed by ordinary folks include how to break down a door, how to deal with a downed power line, how to escape from a sinking car, how to treat frostbite, and how to avoid being struck by lightning. For the more adventurous souls, technical assistance is provided for how to escape from quicksand, how to land a plane, how to survive if your parachute fails to open, and how to get to the surface if your scuba tanks runs out of air. For every wild scenario (such as how to maneuver on top of a moving train) there is an equally plausible explanation for something probable, such as how to treat a leg fracture. There are some surprising bits of advice that are contrary to what most people believe such as not sucking out poisonous snake venom from a victim's wound, which will then poison the rescuer. The authors consulted experts in each field in order to provide the most accurate advice possible. Both Piven and Borgenicht are writers and editors and have experienced some dangerous encounters of their own. While some chapters will generate chuckles, others will make you pause to take notes, as you never know when you might find yourself in dire straits. Sure to be a big hit with teenage boys and adventurous types. Read by Burt Reynolds, this book is highly recommended for all public libraries. Very fun - great gift idea for a variety of folks!

This book is great for kids because it has lots of fun pictures to go with the topics, and it's also great for adults because it has lots of fun pictures to go with the topics. Hehe!

If you've ever wanted to know the best way to escape quick sand, you'll finally know after reading this book. It's comical at times, frank at others, and all around light reading.

I gave a couple copies away at Christmas this year (to the boys in my family) and EVERYONE was pawing at it before the nights end, wanting to learn the most efficient ways to survive this thing called life... when you happen to be stuck out on your own in the African bush or somewhere similar. ;)

Really - a fun gift for someone you may not know too well, and a great gift for the youthful bunch in your own family. I recommend!

Having had a chance to put the advice to the test...

I'm impressed with this book. Irony of ironies, I read this book the day before the 6.8 earthquake here in Seattle. How did the section on "How to Survive and Earthquake" fare? Pretty well. Tip No. 1 is "If you are indoors, stay there!" Having looked outside the window of my downtown office building and watched the light poles, electrical wires, stop lights etc. bounce around over the heads of pedestrians, I'd say that was pretty good advice. The authors also suggest where to go - under a desk or table, under a doorway, in a hallway or against an interior wall - and stay away from glass. I went for the doorway option, which wasn't that great an idea because the door kept trying to slam closed. Next time I'll take the first suggestion and get under the desk. The authors also suggest that you stay off the phone so that the lines will remain clear for emergencies. Good advice, but virtually impossible to follow. The cellphone lines were immediately jammed (and I know this because, yes, I did try to check in with family). Nevertheless, the overall advice is very sound, and I was glad to have read it.
The rest of the book is a mix of things that might actually be useful someday and things that are just there for amusement's sake. I'm absolutely positive that I'll never leap from a motorcycle into a car, but it was fun to read how to do it.

Hilarious and Informative

This book is hilarious and just academic enough to actually provide useful information to an incoming (or current) college student. It gives advice, along with graphics, on everything on how to make t-shirt curtains to writing a last minute paper. I purchased it for a high school grad and can't wait to gift it!

In her latest book geared for very young children, author, Madi Preda, has done a remarkable job using rhyme to teach children how to count. Teachers and parents alike will love picking up "Little Martians Learn to Count" and reading it to children.

In a variety of ways, I would recommend teachers use Preda's new book for thematic lessons on counting. Creating fun activities coupled with curricular for Math lessons would not only make learning numbers fun, but students will retain the knowledge and build on their learning.

Author Madi Preda has succeeded in penning a great children's book. She shows her creativity and imagination as she takes her young readers into the realm of numbers.
Little Martians Learn to Count is a fun way of helping kids not only to count but also write/draw the numbers. Each number is described in a very suggestive rhymed stanza. The eye catching, funny images will surely attract children of preschool and kindergarten. Fun pictures always make at lesson sink in better.
The many charming, colorful illustrations move along beautifully with the rhythm of the stanzas. Children usually enjoy rhyming books. I think any kid would love to learn the numbers with this book.
Little Martians Learn to Count colorful booklet is an excellent extra- curricular material for parents and teachers both at school and also at home.

Interesting, helpful, educational and fun. We, grown-ups, should better understand the importance of developing human intellectual powers at an early age. That is when we form our speech ability, language mastery, thought, reasoning etc. Something we pride ourselves on and would like to show off in front of anyone else.
Coupled with great pictures and visual material, this booklet is really enjoyable for both kids and parents.
