Eye-opening part of history

I'm an author and read this while doing research for a novel. My eyes were opened. While gay, lesbian and bisexual Americans volunteered, and died in the service to our country during WWII, they were, for the most part, systematically discriminated against and treated with dishonesty, humiliation and psychological abuse.

Sometimes mere accusations with no proof were enough to drum a member out of our armed forces depriving them of rights and the GI Bill benefits. To make it worse, their draft boards were told and work got around in civilian life that they were unfit. In that era, after the war, the lack of an honorable discharge often cast such a dark shadow that many couldn't find work.

For those who believe being gay is a choice and a sin I disagree with you. I ask if you truly believe that or if you are doing a knee-jerk reaction to poison ideas implanted in you.

This story is history, and you won't read of it in standard history books. Discrimination is discrimination is wrong. The pledge of allegiance ends: "with liberty and justice for all."

You've come a long way baby, but not that far it seems.

A little academic in spots but a fascinating history of how gay men and women did their part during WWII. The official discrimination they faced was inconsistent certainly, with many officers looking the other way if they were pulling their weight and others going out of their way to "bust the queers". Regardless of your personal attitudes towards the gay community, the part they played in helping to win the war cannot be discounted.

Historical Prespective

this is an excellent book, revealing a bit of history that I am sure very few are aware. I thought is was well written and factual; the characters in this book are what they are and it was interesting to hear their point of view of a situation they bascily had no control over, being drafted into military service. If anything this helps give a presepctive as to why the military has acted the way they have when it comes to gay and lesbian service members. These individuals showed great courage and charater as their stories unfold. Well worth the read.

About the Author
Michael S. Scheeringa, MD, MPH, holds the Venancio Antonio Wander Garcia IV, MD, Chair of Psychiatry and is Vice Chair of Research and Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences�at the Tulane University School of Medicine. His research focuses on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in youth, including preschool children, and has included large multimodal assessment studies and randomized clinical trials. He developed and tested a cognitive-behavioral therapy manual on preschool PTSD treatment, which was the basis for this book. Dr. Scheeringa also developed one of the few diagnostic assessment interviews for young children, the Diagnostic Infant and Preschool Assessment. He is currently working to support the implementation of evidence-based screening, assessment, and treatment for trauma-related problems in the child welfare system in Louisiana. Dr. Scheeringa is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a recipient of the Irving Phillips Award for Prevention from the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, among other honors.

Juego de seducci�n

Una novela muy bonita, en que el juego de la seducci�n est� muy bien logrado en el acuerdo que establecen los personajes principales, que incluye s�lo un beso diario al que ella tiene el poder de colocarle fin cada vez. Tiene otros componentes que tambi�n la hacen muy atractiva, como los problemas de seguridad en la mina y las situaciones que se viven por esa causa. Pero lo que m�s me gust� fue el proceso de autoconocimiento de la protagonista durante el transcurso de la historia, quien, enfrentada toda su vida a una educaci�n religiosa al ser hija de un pastor metodista, por fin logra entender y aceptar su propia esencia.

LOVE this book - Simple, Practical Approach to the Tao

I love, love, love this book. I am a fan of Wayne Dyer as it is, but this approach of breaking down all the verses of the Tao into relatable, practical examples and definitions is fantastic. I have been slowly going through each one of the verses and applying the lessons every week. There are certain verses that feel almost like common sense but then there are others that are so challenging in conception, let alone application, that I can truthfully say that my world is slowly being transformed. Inspired by the teaching of Tao Te Ching I have checked out other books on the Tao but they tend to be too scholarly and confusing. I do not have other people in my life who are familiar with the teachings of Lao Tzu so when a confusing verse comes up I feel as if the information provided in this book is really my only place to process, and it is done well enough that I can do so with confidence. It is a great book, and if you decide to take your time and truly process the teachings I think the book title is 100% true - your life will change.

Do the Tao Now

Dr. Wayne Dyer brings a bit of New Age self-help interpretation to his interpretation of the 81 verses of the Tao Te Ching. He approaches the book in a "typical" self help way - with a rendering of the verse at hand, an interpretation based on his meditation on it, and then a methodology to implement and experience the Tao lesson in daily life. The book is well written from the self-help perspective, and for the typical Western reader will provide some interesting and useful insights into the writings of Lao Tzu.

Having given the praise, I want to caveat the book by noting that if you are a Taoist scholar (I am not, though I studied it some nearly a decade ago), Dr. Dyer's book will read like a Children's Bible or New Age Christianity to the traditional Christian. The interpretations are very modern, Western and organic. The practices are relatively simple, and the lessons somewhat superficial. That doesn't diminish their value to the average reader, but this isn't a Taoist text in any traditional sense.

An interesting format and interpretation of the Tao for the modern American self-help reader.

What I Did on Vacation

I think Wayne Dyer got kind of burned out making too many series for PBS that dealt with living a full life.

Apparently, he took time off and went to Hawaii or some other island paradise to decompress.

He read his way through the Tao Te Ching one chapter a day, thought about it, then sat down and wrote something in between an interpretation, an analysis, and a reflective essay. (It is not easy to come up in between three things without the use of a Venn diagram, but he did.)

This is a very well written work that addresses fresh insights and efficient responses to the human condition.

The philosophy of the Tao is one half of the two views China developed on how to live. Obviously, the other stands in total opposition to the Taolsm. (Tao says, "fugedabowdit." Confucious says,"Yo, Beeahch! Do something.)

Sometimes a new bottle releases flavors missed before. This is a surprisingly very good book. Nudge...nudge. Buy it!
