Debt -- both public debt and private debt -- has become a major concern of economic and political leaders. In The Making of the Indebted Man, Maurizio Lazzarato shows that, far from being a threat to the capitalist economy, debt lies at the very core of the neoliberal project. Through a reading of Karl Marx's lesser-known youthful writings on John Mill, and a rereading of writings by Friedrich Nietzsche, Gilles Deleuze, Félix Guattari, and Michel Foucault, Lazzarato demonstrates that debt is above all a political construction, and that the creditor/debtor relation is the fundamental social relation of Western societies.

Debt cannot be reduced to a simple economic mechanism, for it is also a technique of "public safety" through which individual and collective subjectivities are governed and controlled. Its aim is to minimize the uncertainty of the time and behavior of the governed. We are forever sinking further into debt to the State, to private insurance, and, on a more general level, to corporations. To insure that we honor our debts, we are at once encouraged and compelled to become the "entrepreneurs" of our lives, of our "human capital." In this way, our entire material, psychological, and affective horizon is upended and reconfigured.

How do we extricate ourselves from this impossible situation? How do we escape the neoliberal condition of the indebted man? Lazzarato argues that we will have to recognize that there is no simple technical, economic, or financial solution. We must instead radically challenge the fundamental social relation structuring capitalism: the system of debt.

Mr. Lazzarato is a man who should be heard. In his own words, "The debtor-creditor relationship--the subject of this book--intensifies mechanisms of exploitation and domination at every level of society, for within it no distinction exists between workers and the unemployed, consumers and producers, working and non-working populations, retirees and welfare recipients. Everyone is a "debtor," accountable to and guilty before capital. Capital has become the Great Creditor, the Universal Creditor." I have found that there is a refreshingly different angle to criticism of unregulated capitalism that comes from books written by Europeans, especially those with a philosophical bent.

Should be reqired reading for all high school students

Everyone from a farmer to the highest CEO or Politician should have to read this text. It is a blunt and brutal explanations of current monetary system, how we got their and the ideas that have propagated and failed as a whole in the different views of capitalism and its relation to debt and why it has a place in society but why at current it is also become more than a means to replace barter and trade and is now a means of control and sublimation. If you have any interest what so ever in economics, business or personal finance pick this book up. In its place in the series it really stands up and above to be it own separate text, and deserves more attention in society as a whole. Also incredibly good take on Greece and the EU and American financial crisis and where they will most likely go.

Economist and philosopher Lazzarato engages Deleuze’s work on power to articulate a theory of neoliberalism as a debt economy. Arguing that financial capitalism is structured as an assymetrical relation of debtor and creditor (rather than a market society of exchanges), he argues that neoliberal capital is a system of capital “flows” that have crystallized to capture subjects under unaccountable credit institutions such as the Troika. Tracking the emergence of central bank independence and the concomitant sovereign debt crises in the Eurozone, Lazzarato argues powerfully for a restructuring of the debt economy. To my mind, Deleuze’s notions of capital flows and machinic assemblages do less clarifying work than he believes, but this is nevertheless important reading.

About the Author
In 2009, Jonathan Zufi conceived the idea of photographing every product ever made by Apple and began showcasing his work on his website shrineofapple.com. He has been a leader in technology innovation since the mid 1980s. In 2002, he received the Pearcey Award, one of the Australian government's highest awards for IT innovation for pioneering achievement and contributions to research and development within the IT industry. He has a Bachelor of Computing (with honors) from the department of Robotics and Digital Technology at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.

Best Apple product photos available!

This is a very fun book and the photography is excellent. My actual Lime Green iBook SE is pictured in this book (pages 110, 112-113 and 115 in the revised edition), so I'm a little biased. Johathan Zufi purchased my iBook from ebay in order to photograph it for this book, so I HAD to buy it, but if you love apple products, you will see some excellent photos of them here in this collection. I know a lot about older Apple stuff, and I saw at least a few products that I did not know ever existed.... and many others that I had at one time and remembered fondly... so it was fun. There are some neat quotes from Apple guys too... Johathan Zufi is a great guy too. I have spoken with him a few times via email and he is always responsive and courteous. I'm happy to support his effort here, which was massive and you will be able to see that right away when you look at this awesome book.

Love this book. I was a little disappointed that it had a couple little dents/scuffs on the front cover but that's an Amazon shipping issue.

The book it's self is great and I love looking through all the old Apple products. Definitely recommend this book for any Apple addicts.

A disappointment for the price, but probably the best available in print.

I used this textbook for an introductory-level class in geomorphology for undergrads and graduate students. The course assumed no background in geomorphology, but required a beginning course in geology or physical geography. While this text was adequate for the class' needs (and is superior to or on par with others currently in print), I have a number of frustrations with the book.

First: for the price, this textbook is poorly made. The binding is weak, and the pages are of a thin, low-quality paper that allows highlighter ink to bleed through (so be prepared to do a lot of underlining instead). There are no color photographs, except for a couple of photo inserts in the center to supplement the otherwise black and white diagrams. The images themselves are also often too far from their references, so there is a lot of flipping back and forth in the text while you read about a topic that doesn't correspond with the actual images on the pages (which typically belong to a concept described several pages earlier).

The writing itself is fairly accessible, but at times becomes overly complicated becaues of poorly-defined terms, circumlocutive explanations, and redundancies. Terms are often defined well after they've been used in the text, and the definitions often include or are anchored by the term itself. This unecessarily complicates the sentence structure in many cases, as in this example from page 305:

"Ice sheets and ice caps are large enough not to be confined by topography, and their configuration reflects the size and shape of the glacier, rather than the underlying topography."

As a consequence, the flow of many chapters is choppy, and it is occasionally difficult to find all the information you need quickly when looking up terms or studying for an exam.

With these weaknesses in mind, the text itself does do a fairly good job of addressing a wide range of subjects pertaining to geomorphology, including both the patterns and processes of landforms creation. It is fairly up-to-date, and the figures are clear and well-explained (though once again the use of color would greatly enhance the usefulness of this text). It covers a wide range of landforms, including fluvial and eolian processes, shorelines, several chapters devoted to glaciers and glaciation, and tectonic landforms.

With a shortage of alternative texts, Surface Processes and Landforms is an acceptable introduction to geomorphology. Sections that are less up-to-date (since the last edition in 1999) can be supplemented effectively with outside readings. A revised third edition could easily clear up most of the problems in the second, with the inclusion of better images and a tighter editing job. For the price, it fails to deliver in some key areas, however, and non-majors especially will want to consider this before making an investment; find a used copy if you can, or share with a friend.

I used this textbook for a geography class called "Landforms". It was a great guide and a fairly easy read. My only problem with it is it is all in black and white except for a couple of color photo inserts.

About the Author
James career began at a young age as chef at The Schoolhouse in the Southern Highlands where he had grown up. As head chef at the restaurant, he received the accolade of being one of the youngest chefs ever awarded a Sydney Morning Herald Chef's Hat, at the age of 23. James then worked overseas for a number of years to gain experience in the kitchens of some of the world's best chefs. Biota Dining has become one of the most awarded regional restaurants in NSW. The restaurant went on to win a second hat in its second year in 2012 as well as the Sustainability Award. Its grounds include a substantial kitchen garden, an onsite glasshouse growing local and imported seedlings and a popular monthly farmer's market. James recently opened 12 rooms on Biota's beautiful grounds. All 13 comfortable Scandinavian-style rooms have queen or king beds, modern bathrooms and facilities, and outlooks onto the Biota Dining grounds and gardens.

Olive Kobusingye is a Ugandan surgeon and injury epidemiologist. She is a graduate of Makerere University, the University of London, and the State University of New York at Albany. Reading it online is not satisfactory, You have to have a copy. when you read it, you will re-read as it tells of the unforgetable past and present of Uganda. Thanks Amazon and Bless you Olive.

Excellent account about Uganda

This is a well written books and gives a good account of Uganda under Museveni. This is a book which I bought for my home library as I had read it before and felt I needed my own copy. The analysis is really good and gives an insightful account of what has gone wrong in Uganda since Museveni and his group came to power. Olive Kobusingye who is a sistsre of one the key players in Uganda's politics did have access to all manner of people and was herself on the receiving end of Museveni's agents and so there are some interesting first person accounts. It is recommended reading for anyone who wants to understand Uganda and its politics in recent times. It is a pity that the book is not available in electronic format as that would ensure an even wider readership.

Where do You Draw the Line?

I lived in Uganda for 10 years, 1993 -2003. I was there during an election
and never thought that these kinds of things had been occurring.

The current President was considered a far more civilized ruler than the prior two,
Milton Obote and Idi Amin.

In reading this book, I have my doubts about those in power, there, and those who support them.
