Great information about the Pacific Theater, Poor Editing

This book presents a fascinating view of action in the Pacific Theater, and provides information that does a lot to explain the events that took place. To me, it seems to provide a very balanced viewpoint.

At the same time, this book is poorly edited. The number of typos, bad spellings, etc., is distracting. It's almost as if a high school student of college freshman was given an assignment to edit the book and did an incomplete job. I don't know if this issue stems from the author or the publisher, or a combination of both; but this book has more typos and mistakes than almost any historical book I've ever read.

So, to sum it up, the content is great, but the editing job leaves something to be desired.

Well structured,well written,concise and authoritative

It is a book worth reading on the subject.It covers all important issues of this monumental struggle with incisiveness ,depth,integrity,profound understanding of events,perceptions and decisions and it is balanced in the sense that it studies and explains also the Japanese point of view
The author is correctly critical of the dual advance against Japan that was adopted to accommodate Mac Arthur's ego and his influential supporters in the States.Spector belongs to the newer generation of Historians that debunk the myth of Mac Arthur's strategic genius.
The book is to be admired for its economy of style and its simple and austere presentation of a complex story in which the author eliminates all verbosity
It does not add much to somebody who has studied extensively this conflict in many volumes of many authors but it does not miss anything important either.
It has some minor mistakes as for example on how the 6F6 Hellcat was designed but overall it is a very balanced and informative book showing clearly how the U.S. fighting officers and men ascended the learning curve and beat the Japanese.it has a very good understanding of the Japanese way of thinking,politics,strategy and tactics.
I believe that it is probably the best one volume book among those written on the subject and better than some more voluminous works.Some maps would have been very useful in the Kindle edition. The prose is easy flowing and the clear sentences make for easy reading without loss of the essence
Overall a very sound History book.

Spector offers a solid one volume account of the Pacific Theater

I purchased this book due to wanting a change of scenery from the Normandy Campaign and the European Theater as I am a WWII history buff, but mainly favor reading and learning about the European Theater. I searched on here and found this book by Spector and am pleasantly surprised by it and enjoyed it for the most part.

Pros: A very well done account of the Pacific Theater of World War II. Spector covers all of the major battles, operations, the important players for Japanese and Allied forces, the locations, and some other interesting nuggets such as introducing the American military build up in all branches from WWI to WWII as well as Japanese military build up.

Cons: At times the formatting is confusing. What I mean is...he talks about parts of the Pacific theater until page 300ish til 1944 or so and then jumps to the Chinese and Burma part of the war way back in 1941 and 1942, which could be confusing to casual readers. I am a history major so I handled it alright but even to me it was puzzling. Then, in the 400ish page ranges he started including random chapters on the negro, women, etc, in the war, and a chapter on what men did on leave in various locations in the war. Don't get me wrong, some of the more interesting chapters in the book, but perhaps he should have worked these into the book earlier as I was use to the various island operations and theaters of war discussed and then he goes to a chapter on leave just as the final build up is coming to end the war.

I know the cons look longer than the pros but this is definitely a 4/5 star book. The info is great, the sources are awesome. This book focus's on the operational part of the Pacific Theater, not a narrative type of the war like some historians like Stephen Ambrose, Cornelius Ryan, and Antony Beevor have done so well over the years, and I love those types of history books the best, but this is still a fairly easy read of sorts, if you can stay focused on all the dozens of names and places. There is only one map at the beginning, which some might not like, but it does a good job of showing locales of major battles but just one map...so some might want a book with more maps. Overall, I recommend this book...if you enjoy World War II history or if you are someone who enjoys history and can handle a for the most part operational view on the war, not a narrative for the most part.

Its history extended beyond the founding of Dynastic Egypt and Napatan-Meroitic Kush and equally significant, is the fact that long after ancient Egypt had been subdued by the Ptolemies and Rome, ancient Nubian civilization continued to thrive in late antiquity as an independent kingdom, first as a classical pharaonic culture and then as a Christian polity until the 15th century. The Roots of Nubian Christianity Uncovered: The Triumph of The Last Pharaoh: answers the questions: how and why did ancient Nubia convert to Christianity during the 4th 6th century CE? The book demonstrates that it is no longer acceptable to argue that Nubia converted to Christianity in the sixth century CE due to Byzantine Missions, but that a little known monarch, the Nubian king Silko who ruled in the 5th century inaugurated the beginnings of Christianity in ancient Nubia. King Silko was in fact the Last Pharaoh in the Nile Valley and the first Christian king of Medieval Nubia. The Nubian Pharaoh Silko was to ancient Nubia what Constantine was to Rome and the legend of King Arthur was to Britain, a founding Christian monarch and a transitional historical figure. Nubian sovereign religion in the fifth century CE was an amalgamation of Classical Sudanese and Egyptian traditions, Meroitic imperial culture, Christian traditions indigenous to Coptic Egypt, and Roman military piety. By utilizing contemporary African and African diaspora religions and applying methods that are traditionally employed in contemporary studies of conversion in Africa and the African Diaspora The Roots of Nubian Christianity Uncovered highlights the themes of cultural complexity and multiple religious identities in late antique Nubia. About the Author
SALIM FARAJI is Associate Professor and Chair of Africana Studies at California State University, Dominguez Hills. He completed his Master of Divinity at the Claremont School of Theology and M.A. and PhD at Claremont Graduate University. He is a member of the International Society for Nubian Studies and specializes in early Christian history, Africana and Africanist historiography, Coptic Studies and the Sudanic, Napatan, Meroitic and Medieval periods of Nubian history. Professor Faraji is a contributor to the Encyclopedia of African Religion and the Oxford Dictionary of African Biography and is co-author of The Origin of the Word of the Amen: Ancient Knowledge the Bible Has Never Told and The Plan: A Guide for Women Raising African American Boys from Conception to College.

This book is powerful and infomatiive. It is very helpful that the person who who the booo is believer in the Messiah but goes to great lengths to expose the hidden history of African people and how christianity was hijacked by non-African peoples to substantiate slavery. He does an excellant job of filling in missing pieces of history that I've question my whole life. You may not agree with everything he writes but you can't ignore history and once it is exposed to readers, you have no choice but to go on a trek to search for yourself concerning the facts to discover the myths put forth as facts. The definitive book on Borderline Personality Disorder

When I first heard Dr. Kernberg speak, I thought he deserved his reputation as a brilliant but intimidating psychiatrist. After reading this book I came away with a very different understanding-- that he is not simply a master theoretician on personality disorder, but also a gifted healer, with deep understanding and wisdom in his approach to his patients. First written in 1975, this book remains the definitive comprehensive work on Borderline Personality Disorder and on Narcissistic pathology.
Early in his text, Dr. Kernberg summarizes the salient contributions to his evolving understanding of personality development, made by prior leading pioneers: Anna Freud (on the understanding of defense mechanisms, their essential hierarchical ordering, from primitive to most mature, based on their order of appearance in the developing child), Melanie Klein (on the origin and the nature of the infantile oral aggression which is the fundamental disturbance from which spring the hallmark symptoms of splitting, idealization, overvaluation, and their vicissitudes), Helene Deutsch (on the concept of the "as if" personality, which beautifully explains the nature of the identity disturbance and emptiness of the BPD).
He follows his literature review with what I believe is the best chapter (and one whose reading alone makes owning this book worthwhile) "The Syndrome". Here is found perhaps his greatest contribution into the elucidation of the condition (the seeds of which he gives credit to Dr. Karl Menninger): the idea of mental illness as a unitary process, and personality pathology as organized on a dimensional continuum. In this conceptualization, an understanding of BPD emerges which allows the reader to break through (what was for me) the confusing DSM IV catalogue defining the disorder as a many-headed hydra of pathological symptoms and behaviors: BPD is unstable affects--anger, rage, dysphoria, anxiety. It is emptiness, lack of identity. It is also impulsivity, promiscuity, eating disorder symptoms, substance abuse, self-injury, suicidal acts. Wait...it is also unstable relationships--frantic efforts, devaluation, idealization! Reading this chapter of Dr. Kernberg's book finally gave me a clear basis for understanding each of the DSM IV criteria, how they interrelate, how they arise within the psyche, and how the presence and severity of each, and their unique combination in each patient predicts her/his prognosis, and guides treatment.
Kernberg's great contribution is that Borderline Personality is not a separate and discrete entity. It is in fact better understood as a spectrum of "Borderline Conditions" which is then to be understood as a unique dimension of personality pathology. This dimension is in turn superimposable on a second continuum consisting of many other personality disorders. The latter in turn are ordered from the "lowest" and most severe, characterized by the most primitive defenses: Narcissistic, (containing Paranoid and Antisocial subtypes), Infantile (with Dependent subtypes), and finally Hysterical, Depressive/Masochistic, and Obsessive personalities, which utilize "higher level" defenses(Reaction Formation, Identification with the Aggressor).(Those in this last group in particular however, may be rendered much sicker if colored by severe forms of the Borderline Conditions).
The elucidation of this theory may well appear arcane and esoteric. The clinician may be tempted to dismiss it as an academic exercise with little salience to the modern treatment of Borderline and other severe personality disorders, and return to his much more user-friendly DBT manual! If he hangs in however, and forges through more of this book the reader will find that the remaining chapters are much easier to understand, once the first two sink in, and confer much wisdom into the treatment of BPD, and of the other serious personality constellations that it so often colors and coexists with, one of which, the Narcissistic constellation, receives comprehensive attention in the second half of the book.
I can touch on just a few treatment pearls that are presented:
1. How to determine capacity for intensive work thus decide if psychodynamic vs. supportive therapy is indicated; and on length of therapy and session frequency(e.g. level of anxiety tolerance, presence of the capacity for depression and guilt (indicative of more developed superego and better prognosis).
2. The potential pitfalls in therapy (transference and counter-transference based)and how to avoid them: patient idealization or devaluation of the therapist, splitting by patient of her negative states after acting out within them (rendering them unavailable to work with in therapy), therapist masochistic submission to patient's aggression (taking calls at all hours, responding to serial spurious "crises"), a sense of therapist's impotence, and/or exaggerated fear of criticism by third parties (leading to therapist fear & aggression: retaliating to patient's threats of suicide with punitive involuntary hospitalization, or with countertherapeutic "contracts" whereby the patient is given rigid conditions for ejection from therapy).
I hope my review influences the reader who may, like myself, (in real life) have little opportunity to practice Dr. Kernberg's recommended many years of weekly psychotherapy,to dive into this book nevertheless; he will emerge with much more wisdom, understanding, and empathy for many of his sickest patients.

Very deep and profound, explains a lot about personality disorders

If you are reading about narcissism, you will see Otto Kernberg's name cited as a reference more than any other. Dr. Kernberg is THE expert on the subject. Dr. Kernberg's book "Borderline Conditions and Pathological Narcissism" was obviously written for professionals and serious students of psychology, but since he does not have to rely on obfuscation to impress anyone with his credentials, he has written a book that is amazingly clear even to the layman. In our times, personality disorders have overtaken neurosis as the big problem causer for individuals, families, and society. Personality disorders are complex, with layers like an onion, but they are also interesting to research. My interest in Narcissistic Personality Disorder began with the epiphany that this disorder was what I was dealing with in a problematic significant other. Defining the problem helped a lot with my frustration and anger at having been devalued, lied to and stolen from by someone who was supposed to love me. Once I knew "what" I had encountered, I next found myself driven to find out "why". What causes the narcissist to form the false identity shell of feigned superiority, scorn for and devaluation of others, lies, cheating, and constant use of defense mechanisms? If you want to delve deeper than the pop-psyche or self help books on this subject, try reading this book. My copy is filled with highlighted paragraphs, paperclips, and notations in the margins. Here is a quote from page 81 of the paperback edition: "...a primitive, sadistic mother image may be projected onto the therapist while the patient experiences himself as the frightened, attacked, panic-stricken little child; moments later, the patient may experience himself as the stern, prohibitive, moralistic (and extremely sadistic) primitive mother image, while the therapist is seen as the guilty, defensive, frightened but rebellious little child." Of course I was not his therapist, and he not my patient, but the dynamic was obviously the same. Knowing the family history of my ex, this excerpt explained to me what was behind several years of misery and confusion for me and over forty years of the same for him. On page 124, Dr. Kernberg explains a "teasing" characteristic which, in my relationship, had me completely puzzled and frustrated: "...a patient with serious masochistic trends and rationalization of failure as being always the fault of another's aggression or of fate, and who, at the same time, presents rather sadistic behavior with a teasing quality under certain circumstances, is not disturbed at all when confronted with the contradiction between such teasing behavior and his tendency to complain about how he is being mistreated by others; the tolerance of such contradictions within established behavior patterns is a severe prognostic sign." The book is filled with similar gems of understanding, which, if you have been the victim of a narcissist, will explain so many long unanswered questions. An excellent book, you will emerge a person of clearer understanding for having read it. Just remember that an explanation of the origins of abusive behavior is not an excuse for such behavior, and that your chief (perhaps only) duty is to protect yourself from your abuser, without regard for the origins or reasons for the abuse.

A Seminal Achievement

Dr. Kernberg doesn't unequivocally suggest that narcissism is always a mere "fixation on an early developmental phase". In fact, this is one the differences between his theory of narcissism and that of Heinz Kohut, which he expounds on in his book. According to Kernberg circa this book's publication, narcissism comes in more than a few variations, ranging from infantile narcissism to healthy adult narcissism to the pathological variety. Even a personality of higher organization can possess remnants of infantile grandiosity, which can become more pronounced if a person regresses (in crises, e.g.). Kernberg does not suggest that pathological narcissism is invariably the product of developmental arrest.

Vaknin is right to note that borderline conditions and narcissism do look quite similar in this book, but Kernberg acknowledges that the two are somewhat similar insofar as similar defenses are often used in both (Kernberg refers to the a "narcissistic personality functioning on a borderline level" often to draw attention to cases of heterogenous pathology). However, narcissistic and borderline personalities employ these defenses for different reasons; in BPD, splitting is predominatly used to keep aggression and "bad" self and object representations from contaminating libido-driven "good" self and object representations, whereas those with NPD have diametrically opposed object relationships that alternate between idealization and devaluation vis-a-vis frustration, typically. Devaluation (treating a person like trash AND defiling their internal object representation) spares the narcissist an unbearable mixture of envy, rage, grief and righteous indignation when they can't obtain "narcissistic supplies" from him/her. They rely on projection of their own envy onto others to obtain relief from their painful experience of frustration and greed; as a result, they frequently experience significant paranoid symptoms when distressed . Frustration and shame are the central affects which NPD individuals unconsciously aim to keep at bay.

This book is brilliant. A cursory understanding of psychoanlytic thought and object relations would certainly increase this stunning work's "readability", but it's likely appropriate for anyone interested in the subject.

About the Author

Christian Mancas, PhD, is currently an associate professor with both the Mathematics and Computer Science Departments of Ovidius University, Constanta, Romania, and the Engineering Taught in Foreign Languages Department (Computer Science and Telecommunications in English stream) of Politehnica University, Bucharest, Romania (as an invited professor). Since 2012, he is also a database architect with Asentinel International srl, Bucharest, a subsidiary of Asentinel LLC, Memphis, Tennessee. His specialties include university teaching, R&D, business analysis, conceptual data and knowledge modeling and querying, client-server, hierarchical software architecture, object-oriented, event-driven design, structured development, complex project and small IT company management, Datalog, SQL, C#, XML programming, etc.

Professor Christian Mancas has published dozens of scientific papers (in Romania, USA, Austria, and Greece), which have been indexed by ACM Digital Library, Zentralblatt, Scopus, DBLP, Arnetminer, Researchr, TDGS, SCEAS, etc. He has also published three books in Romanian and dozens of reviews (mostly in USA, including ACM Reviews). He was a program committee member and session chairman for several software conferences in USA, Austria, and Romania, and he is a member of several associations (including ACM, the Romanian Mathematics Sciences Society, and the International Who’s Who of Professionals). Since 2006, his biography is included in Marquis Who’s Who in the World and Who’s Who in Science and Engineering and Hubners’ Who’s Who in Romania.

Since 1990, he also worked for several IT startups, including his own DATASIS Consult srl (co-owned with his good friend and faculty colleague Ion Draghicescu) and DATASIS ProSoft srl (who had 25 programmers working for the design and development of several ERP-type database applications for customers from France, UK, Switzerland, USA, Israel, Greece, and Romania).

His main research areas are conceptual data and knowledge modeling and querying; database design, implementation, and optimization; as well as the architecture, design, development, fine-tuning, and maintenance of data and knowledge base management systems.

Dr. Mancas graduated in 1977 from the Computers Department of Politehnica University of Bucharest, Romania, with a thesis on Generating Parsers for LR(k) Grammars, under the supervision of Professor Dan Luca Serbanati. Up until the fall of communism in 1990, he worked as a software engineer and, since 1980, R&D manager of a state-owned Computer Center in Bucharest (contributing to the design, development, and maintenance of a dedicated ERP), also conducting (from time to time) computer programming labs at Politehnica University of Bucharest, but for political reasons, he was not accepted for PhD studies. He started this program under the supervision of Professor Cristian Giumale in 1992 and obtained his PhD in 1997 from the above department, with a thesis on Conceptual Data and Knowledge Modeling.

“One of the biggest problems in nowadays applications is the management of data. Analyzing and structuring large amounts of data relies on understanding and being able to describe its properties and constraints. Professor Christian Mancas's exceptionally well-documented work, A Conceptual Data Modeling and Database Design, gives the basic insights of the database models and their importance as a foundation for the complex applications. This book guides the reader throughout real-life scenarios, providing essential software engineering advice. Indeed, by addressing some of the problems people usually encounter when designing a database, Professor Mancas pedagogically connects the end user's requirements to the notions of entities and relations between them. Meanwhile, the mathematical analysis and proofs sustain the theoretical background of the statements and provide a complete view of the possible algorithmic optimizations. The first volume, A Fully Algorithmic Approach: The Shortest Advisable Path, represents an important contribution in the learning process as it advocates best practice rules in database designs with clear explanations and practical exercises. About the Author
Allan Larson is an Associate Professor at Washington University, St. Louis, MO.  He received his Ph.D. in Genetics at the University of California, Berkeley.  His fields of specialization include Evolutionary Biology, Molecular Population Genetics and Systematics, and Amphibian Systematics.  He's taught courses in general biology, evolution, and population biology. 

Cleve Hickman is Professor Emeritus at Washington and Lee University, Lexington, VA.  He received his Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of British Columbia, did research in animal physiology for eight years, and taught zoology for over 30 years. He's made over 20 trips to the Galapagos Islands for research and as an instructor for student field trips  

 Larry Roberts is currently teaching parasitology and marine biology at the University of Miami.  He received his Ph.D. in Parasitology from Johns Hopkins University and is a coauthor of Foundations of Parasitology, 5/e.  Past teaching affiliations include University of Massachusetts, Texas Tech University, and Florida International University.  Dr. Roberts has authored numerous research articles and a title of related interest: Underwater World of Sport Diving.

Pathetic! I needed the book rush for my class and when it arrived it wasn't the one in the description. And that was not the last of it. When I tried to reorder the book it was more expensive then when I bought it. They didn't even try to resend me the right book when I desperately needed it!
