Superb Introduction to Therapeutics Development

Medicinal Chemistry is an elegantly structured introduction to the topic. It blends the theory, practice and examples in an exceptionally well flowing presentation.
The first three chapters present the overall history and discovery process in therapeutics.
Then in Chapters 4-5 there is a discussion of enzymes and targets. There are many examples presented and analytical tools presented.
Chapters 6 through 9 discuss items related to the process. Finally Chapters 10 through 12 provide a simple but complete description about the Lead process of drug development. Chapters 11 and 12 provide a great balance of classic Lead development and some contemporary methods.
I would strongly recommend this for Medical students who are looking at Oncology or even Internal Medicine. It goes beyond the introduction to pharmacological materials generally presented to the Med Student and opens the windows on the world of pharmacological development.
This is a wonderful text. Unlike many research oriented books it presents a balanced analysis of all the materials and it does so in an uncluttered manner. It does no talk down to the reader nor does it isolate the reader with overly advanced jargon. The book is exceptionally well laid out and the material is uncluttered, unlike so many other texts that seem to want to include every possible image in a plethora of unreadable colors.
The only weakness in the books is the lack of a chapter on the development of many of the newer cancer therapeutics; those which are pathway modulators such as imatinib and those which are immunomodulators. Although this would have expanded the text, the importance of these new therapeutics really demands some discussion, perhaps in a second edition. To be fair, the author does briefly discuss imatinib on pp 80-81 but this is brief and does not address the pathway issues.
I would strongly recommend this book to anyone seeking to understand more on the pharmacological development area.

This book is intended for College Level Chemistry students (or higher) who want a reference to the chemistry of old and new medicines. A must have for a personal library for a researcher in any related bio/chemical field.
