He said something like “Nyeh” and swiped his hand in my direction.

The Internet has been around long enough as a venue for works like the diary presented here, which debuted online, for such works to have lost some of their mystique. Still, Nissel deserves her moment in the sun. As a struggling college student at the University of Pennsylvania, she decided that to keep her mind off her empty stomach, she would keep a journal of her days and post it on the Net. The result is a series of biting, funny entries about the evil atmosphere of check-cashing offices, the horror of being two cents short for the grocery bill and the joys of making friends who buy dinner. Her wry thoughts about being flat broke will appeal to readers who enjoyed Bridget Jones's exploits and similarly sparky works. Nissel is no fictional Bridget, however, obsessing about weight and cigarettes. She's a city girl who knows the exact price of ramen noodles and the pain of counting pennies. Although she occasionally recycles material, she rants with aplomb, using colorful anecdotes (her elderly landlord comes for the rent and ends up falling asleep on the couch) to pull the reader further into her impoverished reality. She doesn't delve into the actual fear and pain associated with poverty, but views her time of hunger with amusement, like a financial misadventure that she always knew would end. Get Ready for a gut-busting laugh IF you have ever been broke, pick up this book

I have read this book at least ten times. Whenever I feel like giving up...Whenever my sunshine turns to gray....you know where I am going and sorry to quote Prince...But The Broke Diaries is the best gut-busting laugh type of story. Every person who has ever experienced "hard times", "broke moments", " In-between jobs", "in school", or working towards a goal and has to sort of wait that full-time pay check out needs to pick up this book to give you the hope and humor to keep going. This book has so many funny stories. I don't want to spoil it but yeah get ready to laugh. Curl up with a blanket and get some snacks and get ready to laugh....I wish she had an audio book (wink wink Angela Nissel)...It's just hilarious (thinking about the turnstile story lol) YES! I just might put this on my reading list again...

So frickin' funny!

I loved this book. As a former college student who worked through it all for 11 years (I went REAL SLOW), I totally empathize with Nissel's stories. Unlike me, though, Nissel is able to find the humor in any situation, even when the upstairs neighbor's flushed tampons overflow her toilet so badly that the service guys spend a day taking her toilet out of her apartment, leaving her with a nasty gaping hole and four servicemen crammed into her tiny bathroom...after she's back from the gym and just wants a shower.
I had a hard time putting this one down, as it's a definite pick-me-up after any long or stressful day! Will read again :)

Good job for what it is.

This diary was one of the cleverest ideas in a while. It does come off as a little corny in places (I'll agree with critics), but this did well in moving facts along in an urban and comedic tone, which is necessary for what this is.
There are no really jarring "broke" stories, but plenty to relate to or be enlightened by.
Nissel is a clever and tough cookie that earned her stripes and should be applauded. It's definitely more entertaining than your average memoir or bio that's for sure.
