Design verification - Example 16-3, Pg. 435
By VUBON
A./
a1 . D1* = 0.42 x 6 = 2.52
a2 . D2* . m2 = 0.13 x 8 x 0.95 = 0.988
a3 . D3* . m3 = 0.075 x 7.5 x 0.90 = 0.506
Equation 16-8, Pg. 453 :
SN = a1.D1* + a2.D2*.m2 +a3.D3*.m3 = 2.52 + 0.988 + 0.506 = 4.014
SN required to protect the subgrade = 6.5, which is greater than SN provided (=4.014): Not satisfactory !
Thickness of subbase should be equal to - or greater than:
D3 = (SN3 - SN2*) /(a3.m3) = [6.50 - (2.52 + 0.988)] /(0.075 x 0.90) = 44.4 in.
Say D3* = 45 in.
Verifying:
a3 . D3* . m3 = 0.075 x 45 x 0.90 = 3.04
SN /provided = 2.52 + 0.988 + 3.04 = 6.55 : greater than SN required (= 6.50) : O.K.
B./ Please modify formulas (4) and (5) on Pg. 459 accordingly.
Please note that SN(s) of Figure 16-18, all are measured to the same reference line (drawing) along
the top of the surface course. So are true for all the SN(s)*. Also, Note #2 indicates that SN(i)* is
the actual (i.e., design) value of SN(i).
- Equation (4): SN2* must be selected (to be) greater than or equal SN2. It is redundant that
SN1* + SN2* > or = SN2. [There seems to exist a mixed-up here, that is: SN1* = a1 x D1*, and
SN2* = a2 x D2* x m2. This is not quite true. SN2* should be equal to a1 x D1* + a2 x D2* x m2.
Please refer to Equation 16-8 for clarity]
- Equation (5): With D1* and D2* known, D3 will be found via Equation 16-8, as follow:
a3 . D3 . m3 = SN3 - (a1 . D1* + a2 . D2*. m2)
Substitute SN2* for (a1 . D1* + a2 . D2* . m2), thence:
D3 = (SN3 - SN2*) /(a3 . m3)
C./ Formulas (4) and (5) are correct IF both:
a. Note #2 is to be revised by crossing out the term [or SN], and
b. add a Note #3, clearly defining: SN1* = a1 x D1* and SN2* = a2 x D2* x m2
Auditter: Please forward this calc. to the Book's Publisher for both, re-evaluating and issuing
Addendum to the readers.
