The Swedish province of �sterg�tland is one of Scandinavia's breadbaskets, with an archaeological and historical record that speaks of great wealth through the ages. The province has long been recognised as one of the first millennium's political hot spots. Splendid single finds, though never before surveyed comprehensively, offer a rough idea of where elite settlements might be sought. But little has been known about individual elite settlements in first millennium �sterg�tland. Not one of the Beowulfian mead-halls of this book's title, the ostentatious manorial buildings where the Late Iron Age elite lived their lives and played their roles, has been identified in the field. Yet they are easily recognised elsewhere through their architecture and associated find categories. This book aims at beginning to remedy �sterg�tland's regional absence of mead-halls, being an investigation of the province's internal political geography during the period AD 375-1000. Where were the elite settlements? MARTIN RUNDKVIST is an archaeologist who received his doctorate from the University of Stockholm in 2003. He is mainly active in research into the Bronze and Iron Ages in Scandinavia. Furthermore he edits the journal Fornv�nnen and keeps the internationally popular Aardvarchaeology blog.

No mead-halls, but worth reading

Be warned, this book does not actually describe the excavation of any mead hall. It is a good survey of the archaeology of the agricultural areas of first millenium �sterg�tland, by the author of the blog Aardvarchaeology. It will be useful to Boewulf scholars in understanding first millenium land use. Even if you are only a fan of Grimm's fairy tales or the Lord of the Rings, It will give you an idea of what was meant by leaving the residential palace for the fortified stronghold in the forests and mountains.
The cover art is a charming photo of a mead hall and barrow, with a 21 st century wind turbine on the horizon. There are decent photos and illustraions of first millenium metal work for SCA or Viking re-enactors, or archaeologists. A brief story on page 118 mentions a barrow containing "a charcoal layer...of which a blacksmith is said to have made use for his trade, but had to desist, when there was inexplicable noise in the smithy and his wife fell ill".
This is a specialist's work, and it could use a good index. An essential work if you live in �sterg�tland.
A fun read if you like archaeology of this era, or Germanic language folklore, or craft small scale metalworking.
