Swimming with the big fishes: A zenith in zoological illustration

One of the first depictions of marine fauna comes from Samuel Fallours, who was in the service of the Dutch East India Company. On the island of Ambon, one of the Moluccas, he made drawings of fish and other marine organisms of the Indian Ocean and brought them back to Holland in 1712. His drawings belong to a number of sets of similar drawings, depicting hundreds of animals, mostly fish but also crustaceans, insects, a dugong, and even a mermaid. Some of these became the basis for 18th-century publications, among them Louis Renard’sPoissons, Ecrevisses et Crabes(1719) and Franois Valentijn’sVerhandeling der Ongemeene Visschen van Amboina, a chapter in his Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indien(1724−1726).

These beautiful, elaborately detailed and brilliantly colored drawings bear extraordinary witness to the marine fish fauna of the East Indies and can still be interpreted in light of present-day scientific knowledge. From an artistic and historical viewpoint, these drawings are among the finest natural history illustrations ever made.

About the Author
Samuel Fallours apparently born in Rotterdam, began his career as a common soldier in the service of the Dutch East India Company. On 27 April 1703, he sailed from Goeree, the Netherlands, to Batavia where he stayed until at least the close of 1705. By June 1706, he was serving as a soldier in Ambon, assigned to the main guard-house of Castle Victoria. From September 1706 to June 1712, he held the title of Associate Curate (krankbezoeker), a kind of assistant to the clergy, entrusted with consoling the sick of Ambon. He left the Indies for the Netherlands in November 1712. During his sojourn in Ambon, (1706-1712) Fallours executed the illustrations.

Theodore W. Pietsch is Dorothy T. Gilbert Professor in the College of Ocean and Fishery Sciences, and Curator of Fishes at the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture, University of Washington in Seattle. While his primary interest is marine ichthyology, he has published extensively on the history of ichthyology and its seminal figures, including Louis Renard, Samuel Fallours, Charles Plumier, and Georges Cuvier.

Authentic illustrations
By ZA
In preparing this wonderful book, the author, and publisher, the famous Taschen GmbH of Kln, Germany, have gone to extremes to reproduce an exact and faithful facsimile of an extraordinary, one-of-a-kind, early 18th-century manuscript on fishes that gives us a unique glimpse of what marine science was like 300 years ago. It is unfortunate that a previous reviewer has completely misinterpreted the intent of this publication, with naive complaints about "incredibly disappointing quality." Should the bits of dirt, smeared ink, etc., have been removed prior to publication? Surely not! One must view and understand "Tropical Fishes" in its proper context, as a true facsimile rather than a modern, glossy, run-of-the-mill coffee-table book.

Exactly as I had expected
By Scott Schultz
As a antique print collector I was specifically hoping for a true rendering of the actual late 17th to early 18th century natural history illustrations as advertised. Samuel Fallour's first color catalogue of fish was only printed to 100 copies, effectively making it as author Prof. Ted Pietsche put it; " one of the rarest natural history books on earth". Already familiar with the work and knowing full well I'll never get my hands on any originals, this was hopefully going to be the next best thing. Happily Taschen doesn't disappoint! They certainly didn't create this specific format by accident or incompetence, quite the contrary; as the reader you just have to posses enough background knowledge to appreciate it!

Incredibly disappointing quality
By Amanda
I think the subject really says most of it. I was surprised that the illustrations were not cleaned up before printing, and dirt and other miscellaneous marks are present in the reproductions. Most books like this have heavy stock, slightly glossy paper: this allows higher resolution printing, crisper lines, and brighter colors. The paper on this book was beige, thin, and finely corrugated. The result is that the colors are all affected by the beige background and the illustrations are not sharp. Some of the illustrations run into the gutter of the page, the area next to the spine that is lost because the width of the bookblock prevents fully opening the pages. Worst of all, the ink bleeds through on nearly every single page, and in some cases, through to the following page. On one page, it looks like the pages were bound together before the ink had dried, because the ink smeared across the mirroring page, ruining both pages. These are elementary mistakes than even a beginning graphic design student would never make. I am so glad I only paid something like 10% of full price for this.

It's still an interesting book for a marine biologist, and it was deeply discounted, so I'm keeping it for myself. I would, however, never buy something of such poor quality as someone for a gift.
